Next generation Chromebook models boast all-day battery life
With Intel throwing its weight behind Google's Chromebook platform, get ready for a barrage of announcements based on its Bay Trail-M and 4th Generation Core i3 processor line. To kick things off, Asus just rolled out a pair of Chromebooks built around Intel's Bay Trail-M dual-core N2830 processor clocked at 2.42GHz. They include the 11.6-inch C200 and 13.3-inch C300.
"The Fang Mini is no toy, but a fully functional PC," CyberPowerPC says
Boutique system builder CyberPowerPC today stuck out its Fang Mini series of NUC-like PCs. These compact systems measure a scant 4.5 inches by 4.3 inches by 2.4 inches -- small enough to fit in your hand but with enough venom to strike down not only daily computing chores, but also a bit of 3D gaming and 4K video watching, CyberPowerPC says. And unlike the NUC, you can configure a Fang Mini PC with AMD inside.
MSI expands its gaming laptop line with two new models
It takes some monster hardware to push games at 4K, and on the flip side, most modern parts have no trouble pushing pixels at 1920x1080, otherwise known as Full HD 1080p. In an attempt to fill a niche in between those two resolutions, MSI today announced the availability of its GS60 Ghost Pro, a 15.6-inch gaming laptop with a 3K WQHD+ (2880x1620; 16:9) resolution.
Dell is currently the world's third largest supplier of PCs and the No. 1 shipper of computer monitors around the globe. Not bad for a company that started off with a modest $1,000 and team of one back in 1984. Michael Dell reflects on his company's humble beginning as Dell celebrates its 30th anniversary this month, noting that "it's been a thrilling ride" up to this point. He also took a moment to thank customers.
Having looked on from the sidelines while several other OEMs jumped onto the Chromebook bandwagon early, Lenovo is now ready to punch its ticket into the category. Lenovo's launching two consumer Chromebook models, including a traditional clamshell N20 model and a multimode N20p featuring Laptop and Stand modes. Outside of the form factor tricks and touch support, both versions come with the same hardware specs.
A new all-in-one line with an old version of Android
AOC is getting the work week started by rolling out a pair of mySmart All-in-One systems running Android 4.2 Ice Cream Sandwich. There are two versions: the 22-inch A2272PW4T and the 24-inch A2472PW4T. Other than the size and physical screen real estate, they're configured exactly the same, right down to the Full HD 1080p (1920x1080) resolution and odd decision to run a version of Android that's two generations old.
Charity auction honors late Nvidia worker Philip Scholz who gave his life saving another
Life is tough sometimes, there's just no two ways about it. Earlier this year, Philip Scholz, a 35-year-old graphic design marketer employed by Nvidia, lost his life trying to save a man that was laying down on the Caltrain tracks at the Santa Clara station. In his attempt to pull the man off the tracks, both were struck by the commuter train traveling at 50-70MPH. The man on the tracks survived, but Scholz did not. If there's a silver lining to such tragedy, it's that Scholz's name lives on through the Philip Scholz Memorial Foundation, for which Nvidia and Falcon Northwest are attempting to raise funds through a charity auction on eBay.
Acer on Tuesday unveiled what it's calling a 2-in-1 Aspire Swtich 10. The 2-in-1 designation is based on the Aspire Switch 10's ability to function as a laptop or a tablet, though that's a bit of an undersell here. Acer could have marketed the device as a 4-in-1 if choosing to focus on its four modes or orientation, which include the traditional laptop setup, tablet mode, display mode, and tent mode.
Eurocom's latest laptop is an ultraportable that starts at $825
Most of the time when we receive word of a new system offering from Eurocom, it's a desktop replacement-class laptop with all the bells and whistles, and price tag to match. This time around, Eurocom dropped us a line to let us know about its new Electra 2, a thin and light ultraportable that starts out at $825. It comes standard with a 15.6-inch Full HD 1080p IPS display and Intel Core i5 4200M (Haswell) processor clocked at 2.5GHz (3.10GHz Turbo).
The world's first laptop with Technicolor Color Certification
Toshiba was quick to embrace Intel's Ultrabook form factor during its infancy, and now that 4K displays are gaining traction, here comes Toshiba once again. The Toshiba Satellite P55t is a 15.6-inch laptop with a 4K Ultra HD In-Plane Switching (IPS) panel, which offers up four times more pixels than a Full HD 1080p display. It's also supposedly the first notebook in the world to earn Technicolor Color Certification.
