HP is putting together a line of cost friendly touch-enabled laptops built around AMD.

The name of the game is affordability, and Hewlett-Packard is trying to win with a line of touch-enabled laptops that won't break the bank. The same is true of a new family of IPS monitors. As for the laptops, HP has chosen AMD as its running mate in the low(er) cost touch arena, which is not the least bit surprising when you look at AMD's track record in competing on the budget end. We had a chance to speak with a couple of HP reps about their products.

Why choose between Windows 8 and Android when you can have both?

Windows 8 represents a radical redesign of Windows as we've come to know it, and the touch-friendly user interface (UI) encourages PC makers to think outside the box in terms of hardware design. Well, they've been doing that, some proving better at it than others. Interestingly, Asus (pronounced "ey soos") is gambling that consumers will appreciate an all-in-one hybrid that dual boots Windows 8 and Android, and what better place to roll the dice on a new design than in Las Vegas at the Consumer Electronics Show? The Slider S20 is another device that functions as both a tablet and Ultrabook.

Since Microsoft put so much effort into unifying Windows 8's user interface (UI) across multiple devices, we expect to see a fair number of dual-function devices moving forward. Where have all the netbooks gone?

Remember when netbooks were the hottest item in PC land? You could hardly go a week without being buried under an avalanche of new netbook announcements. My, how things have changed. Strictly speaking, the netbook category is no more. Asus is reportedly ending its Eee PC line, and Acer hasn't announced plans to launch any new netbook models. The same goes for MSI and all the other netbook players. So, what happened?

Velocity Micro introduces three new Utrabook systems with zero bloatware.

Looking back at 2012, it was clearly the year of the Ultrabook, at least on the notebook computing side. Barring any surprises, that trend will continue throughout 2013, and even Velocity Micro is getting in on the action. The boutique system builder announced three new "NoteMagix" Ultrabook models starting at $800 for the NoteMagix U430. The entry-level model sports a 14-inch WXGA (1366x768) display and comes equipped with an Intel Core i3 3217U processor, 4GB of RAM, and 500GB HDD + 24GB SSD.

NEC's LaVie X Ultrabook measures just a half-inch thick.

If NEC's LaVie X is any indication, the next generation of Ultrabooks are going to push the envelope in terms of thin profile designs. The LaVie X measures a mere 0.5 inches (12.8mm) at its thinnest point, yet it touts a Full HD 1080p 15.6-inch display, still a rarity in the Ultrabook space. NEC claims it's the thinnest 15.6-inch Ultrabook around, and to the best of our knowledge, it is.

AMD preps next generation mobile GPUs for CES.

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has started talking about its upcoming Radeon HD 8000M GPUs, codenamed "Solar System," which it plans to fully detail next month at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. There will be at least four laptops at CES running the new GPUs, which are said to support DirectX 11.1, OpenGL 4.3, and OpenCL 2.1 programming interfaces.
