The mythical speeds of Google Fiber have been just that until now – mythical. Like the leprechaun’s fabled pot of gold, the service’s high speed riches have existed only in lore, but as of late last week it now has a basis in reality. Even though the Goog’s still busy laying the fiber groundwork in Kansas Cities, a limited Beta apparently launched in a Stanford residential neighborhood recently.
If you listen to environmentalists and home building experts, the future of lighting lies in LEDs (Sorry to break it to you, CFL bulbs). But could LEDs also hold the key to the future of wireless home networking? Yeah, it sounds weird, but scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications in Berlin got the bright idea to try and create a WLAN using nothing more than standard LED bulbs and "a few additional components." And you know what? It worked, and it worked well.
A net neutrality bill may be hacking its way through Washingtonian red tape as we speak, but its long-term success is far from certain. If you remember correctly, one of the matches that lit the neutrality debate was the threat of ISPs charging extra to provide quick access to popular websites like Google. Google, obviously, wants none of that crap. The company's plan to roll out 1Gbps fiber Internet to Kansas Cities (both of them) is not only a great community outreach program, it makes the Goog its own ISP – and the project's one step closer to reality.

Just when you thought you were on top of things by ripping out your old networking gear and replacing it all with 802.11n compliant devices, a new standard is on the horizon. It's called 802.11ac and it's a new Wi-Fi technology that promises 1Gbps speeds. According to In-Stat, 802.11ac will roll out next year, and by 2015 will dominate the market with nearly 1 billion 802.11ac-enabled devices.A slightly imperfect mega music machine
It wasn’t long ago that we turned our critical eye on another recently released Grace Digital Internet radio, the diminutive Solo Wi-Fi Receiver. Although we liked it in a general sense, we found its connectivity somewhat limiting and its controls challenging. We also weren’t sure what it wanted to be: It looked like a bedside radio, but it but needed external amplification and speakers to produce sound.
