Amazon May Launch a 4.7-inch Kindle Smartphone

Another rumor points to an Amazon smartphone on the horizon.

Amazon should do the Internet a favor and either launch a smartphone of its own or come out and say, in no uncertain terms, that it has no intentions of offering a handset. It would save us the trouble of sifting through rumors, which have been permeating the web for about year now. The latest bit of news suggests Amazon is not only still interested in releasing a smartphone, but will go with a 4.7-inch display.

Today was a big day for T-Mobile.

Never say never. Nearly six years after the original iPhone launched, T-Mobile is finally allowed to join the iOS party. Talk about showing up fashionably late, though to be fair, only AT&T was allowed to sell the iPhone up until the beginning of 2011. Since then, however, T-Mobile remained the odd man out, as Verizon Wireless and Sprint both jumped on the bandwagon long before today. Be that as it may, T-Mobile got it done, but will customers dig the unsubsidized price model?

Why pick one or the other when you can have both?

It's never been more affordable to own a name-brand tablet than it is now, especially with the recent price cuts. To further sweeten the pot -- and to remind everyone that yes, it too offers a tablet -- Barnes & Noble recently announced that anyone who purchases a Nook HD+ tablet between March 24, 2013 and March 31, 2013 is eligible to receive a free Nook Simple Touch eReader. That might seem a bit redundant, but if you look at it from the angle of shopping for yourself and for someone else at the same time, you can kill two birds with one stone.

Blackberry still believes phones are the future.

Blackberry CEO Thorsten Heins shared his vision of the future with ABC’s Joanna Stern, and surprise surprise, the future looks bright for Blackberry. Heins claims that ten years from now the phone will be the only device we carry, and accessories to compensate for the form factor of the device will be commonplace. "We are talking about a mobile computing experience that makes sure that for you as a user, you only have to carry one computing device... then you get peripherals around it that make your life much more easy than it is today carrying a tablet, carrying a smartphone, carrying a laptop, going to your office and having a desktop."

Happy second birthday, Amazon Appstore, and here's to many more.

Typically when you're invited to a birthday party, you're expected to bring a gift for the birthday girl or boy (or pet). But in this case, Amazon is the one handing out freebies to anyone and everyone with an Android device to celebrate two years of the Amazon Appstore. There are 18 "app of the day" apps up for grabs, which normally range in price from $1 on up to $10 a pop. Let's have a look.

A new Kindle Fire HD is in the cards, but it won't cost $99.

Tablet prices have fallen sharply in the past year or so, and Amazon is a big reason why. It wasn't until the original Kindle Fire debuted that there was an affordable, name brand alternative to the iPad, along with proof positive that there does indeed exist a market for 7-inch slates. Fast forward to today and there are rumors of $99 tablets on the horizon, including one from Amazon, though don't hold your breath waiting for a lower priced Kindle Fire HD.

This tiny Rebel packs an 18MP CMOS sensor.

Today is a big day for Canon, which announced a few new cameras, including one the company claims is the lightest and smallest digital SLR (DSLR) on the planet, the EOS Rebel SL1. Canon's newest Rebel with a cause features a newly developed 18.0-megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor and DIGIC 5 Image Processor, the combination of which is supposed to deliver high quality shots at a fast rate.

Asus, Acer, and others are no longer releasing new netbook models in the U.S.

We can count on one tightly clenched fist the number of consumer netbook announcements so far in 2013. It's zero, zip, zilch, nada, and whatever other word or phrase you want to use to represent a quantity less than one. Netbooks, while once hugely popular, are largely dead in the U.S., so why is Intel holding onto its Cedar Trail M platform? One reason is because Classmate PCs are selling in developing markets.

Even the shade of black on the new ThinkPad is different from before.

Ladies and gentlemen, meet the ThinkPad T431s, a new business-class Ultrabook from Lenovo that's the thinnest T series ever built. That in and of itself isn't surprising -- PC manufacturers are making a concerted effort towards building thinner and lighter Ultrabooks and noteboks -- but some of the design changes are certainly interesting. Lenovo bid adieu to a handful of signature features, including the right and left buttons below the trackpad.

Microsoft needs to reexamine its Surface RT/Pro strategy.

Redmond, we have a problem. Citing "people with knowledge of [Microsoft's] sales," Bloomberg is reporting Surface tablet shipments in the neighborhood of just 1.5 million units, indicating a lethargic start for the company's foray into modern day tablets. This isn't what Microsoft envisioned when it redesigned and re-imagined Windows specifically with touchscreen devices in mind.
