Hulu has just released a new version of its Hulu Plus app for the Roku set-top box player. You should automatically receive the update to version 1.9 the next time you launch the Hulu Plus app on Roku, though you can also force the update by opening and exiting the Roku Channel Store. Earlier this month Warner Bros. decided to test the social networking waters by making "The Dark Knight" available as a rental on Facebook. At the time, Warner Bros. described Facebook as "a natural extension" of its digital distribution efforts, and the idea was to see if people would be willing to rent and watch movies via the world's most popular social networking site. That initial launch must have been a success, because as of this morning, Warner Bros. added five more films to Facebook.
The hit series "Dexter" is getting axed from Netflix's streaming service. So is "Californication" and every other current, original series. It's the agreement CBS's Showtime and Netflix came to when reworking an expiring streaming content deal, and quite frankly, losing popular shows like "Dexter" simply sucks. But it's not all bad news for Netflix.
According to Bloomberg, Microsoft had finally made the call analysts had been expecting. The Zune player is dead. Instead of making Zune hardware for direct sale to consumers, Redmond will focus their efforts on the Zune software experience in Windows Phone 7. The company believes they have a stronger position in digital entertainment on the phone side, but they face stiff competition.
We were beginning to wonder if Boxee Box would ever tie the knot with Netflix. The two have been flirting with hooking up for months, and behind closed doors, things were getting hot and heavy. It's appropriate, then, that on Valentine's Day, the Boxee Box team announced the two are finally together. If you own a Boxee Box, you're a single update away from enjoying Netflix access, which you can wait to be automatically pushed out or force the issue by heading to Settings > System > Update.
