The breakup between Acer and its former Chief Executive Officer, Gianfranco Lanci, was mildy tense, but swift and free of any drama when the two parted ways almost a year ago. And it probably would have stayed that way too, except Lanci accepted a gig with Lenovo, a move that prompted Acer to file a lawsuit in Italy for an alleged breache of a non-compete clause Lanci signed with his former company.
Lenovo kicked off the new year by unveiling its new lineup of IdeaPad laptops at CES 2012. Despite as many as one-and-a-half dozen new Lenovo laptops being announced at the annual extravaganza, the company still managed to save one model for later. The IdeaPad Y470p may not have made it to CES, but it’s now up for preorder on Lenovo’s website. Unlike the GeForce GT 520M-toting Y470, the Y470p packs the much more capable Radeon HD 7690M GPU. Are Ultrabooks tablet killers? We pose that very question on the cover of this month’s print issue. The debate rages on, but Lenovo is looking to skirt the issue with a newly unveiled offering. Rather than going the Eee Pad Transformer/Slider route and sticking a keyboard on a tablet, Lenovo instead got all bendy and twisty with the IdeaPad YOGA, a touchscreen Ultrabook with a 360 degree hinge on its lid. That little design tweak lets you use the YOGA as a tablet or a notebook. Heck, you can even give it a V-shape, stand it on its end and treat it like an all-in-one.
It's a new year and Lenovo is wasting no time making the most of it. Like so many others, Lenovo's using CES as a springboard to launch several new and refreshed products, and on tap for 2012 are new laptops in the IdeaPad U Series, Y Series, S Series, and Z Series, plus new K Series desktops and space-saving B Series all-in-one (AIO) PCs.
The folks over at Lenovo have been busy unwrapping a bunch of new notebook models for its business customers, and two of the more interesting units are the new ThinkPad X1 Hybrid and ThinkPad T430u Ultrabook. Both will be demonstrated at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week before shipping off to retail later this year.
One of the most popular tech categories in all of 2011 was the tablet PC. For the most part, Intel and Microsoft missed the boat, but luckily for both, the tablet ship hasn't sailed and looks to be just as popular in 2012 as it has been for the past 12 months. Come Q3, Acer and Lenovo will punch their ticket with tablets built around Intel's Clover Trail platform rocking Microsoft's Windows 8.
Shakespeare once wrote, "What's in a name? That which we call a netbook by any other name would smell as sweet," or something like that. Or maybe Juliet was rambling about a rose when she was justifying her secret relationship with Romeo. In any event, Lenovo's upcoming IdeaPad S110 is a netbook even if the OEM insists on calling it a "mini notebook" instead.Connect with MaximumPC
