While the new Radeon 7000 video cards seem to be launching and garnering headlines on an almost daily basis, it would be foolish to forget that AMD is far from the only 800 lb. gorilla in the discrete graphics room. As regular reader JohnP regularly reminds us, several signs point to Nvidia releasing the Kepler-based GeForce GTX 680 on March 22nd. That's just a couple of days away, so we thought we'd do a quick round-up of the various GTX 680 rumors floating around the web.
On Tuesday, Microsoft issued a patch to plug a critical hole in Windows’ Remote Desktop Protocol. Fearing the possibility of an exploit being developed in the “next 30 days,” the company “strongly” advised the immediate deployment of this patch in a blog post detailing the said RDP vulnerability (CVE-2012-0002). Well, it seems that Microsoft was right about the vulnerability being highly attractive to hackers.
Can’t wait for the October 25th launch of Battlefield 3? Neither can a lot of other people – and some of them aren’t waiting. As can only be expected for such a high-profile title, a leaked copy of the PC version of the game has worked its way onto the Internet in the form of – you guessed it – a torrent. Aspiring pirates shouldn’t rush out to download the torrent, though. You still won’t be able to play Battlefield 3 even with those illegal disc images in hand thanks to EA’s always-on DRM.
The human language is a funny thing. In most circumstances, the words “Anonymous nude photos online” could land you in some pretty hot water with your significant other. Not today, though. On August 25th, “Anonymous nude photos online” translates into “Anonymous posts nude photos of BART spokesman Linton Johnson online in an escalation of its war with the San Francisco transit system.”
Now that app stores have almost become de rigueur, it isn’t hugely surprising that even the next iteration of Windows is widely anticipated to have one. It also makes perfect sense considering the fact that Windows 8 is also being optimized to run on media tablets (even including those powered by ARM chips). While the alleged screenshots of Windows 8’s app store UI that were released a few weeks back eventually turned out to be fakes, some Russian enthusiasts now claim to have uncovered a couple of references to the store in a leaked Windows 8 build. In a season of outages, when internet-based services seem to be having a tough time staying online, the last thing anyone wants to talk about is an upcoming cloud-based operating system. But that is exactly what we are about to do. MPC readers, let us ignore the bone-chilling horrors of the past week that are otherwise likely to linger with many of you for a long time, so that we can concentrate on reports of an upcoming Chrome OS netbook from Samsung called “Alex.” The existence of this netbook came to light through a Chromium bug report. Humanity's knowledge of the next version of Windows has come up by leaps and bounds in light of a number of leaks over the past couple of months. New features revealed thus far run the gamut from hard system reset to system-wide implementation of the much maligned “ribbon” UI. Now, freshly leaked Windows 8 M1 Build 7850 screenshots show an overhauled task manager. Meanwhile, there is another report that points to an “Advanced Task Manager” in the latest builds of Windows 8. More details after the jump.
Motorola might have been the first to market with an Android Honeycomb tablet, but its next tablet could very well be based on Gingerbread instead of the tablet-specific OS. That’s according to an Engadget article detailing Motorola’s plans for an enterprise tablet. Hit the jump for more.
There has been a sudden spike in rumors of upcoming Alienware notebooks over the past few days. Evidence confirming the existence of the new notebooks has not only appeared in fairly run-of-the-mill forms like leaked docs and premature hints on the vendor's website, but we have also seen a pre-release review of one of the rumored notebooks – the M14x. But if there was still some doubt about the existence of the all new Alienware M14x, the emergence of the user and factory service manuals for the laptop on Dell's support site should be enough to put them to rest. Rumors of an imminent expansion of Alienware's gaming laptop range are nothing new, but till now they have only been restricted to talk of an 18-incher supposedly called the M18x. However, new pictures posted on a forum named dell.benyouhui, and spotted by Notebook Italia, point to not one but two new Alienware laptops from Dell.
