The once cluttered hard drive market isn't so cluttered anymore. Back in 2000, Maxtor purchased Quantum's hard disk business, primarily for the company's ATA133 IDE interface. Then in 2006, Seagate scooped up Maxtor. A little more recently, Western Digital picked up Hitachi's storage division, giving WD a 50 percent share of the market. Seagate responded by snatching Samsung's HDD business as part of a "broad strategic alignment" between the two. So which company now wields the largest share of the HDD market?
Desktop and notebooks featuring first generation graphics-enabled microprocessors (GEMs) – chips that combine CPU and GPU cores on the same die - from chip-making giants like Intel and AMD are still fairly new to the market, but market research firm iSuppli expects GEMs like Intel Sandy Bridge and AMD Fusion to establish firm control over both the desktop and notebook PC segments by the end of 2011. Hit the jump for more on iSuppli’s GEM outlook for 2011 and beyond.
Market research firm iSuppli says the Japan earthquake and tsunami could impact component supply and pricing with "significant shortages" of some parts, causing pricing to "increase dramatically." There haven't been many reports of damage at production facilities, and the reason we could see a short supply of devices and rising prices is because of the impact on transportation and power infrastructure.
Market research firm did what a lot of you would probably like to do -- it took a chainsaw to an iPad 2, tore it open, and spread its guts out all over the floor. Okay, we might be exaggerating just a tad, and iSuppli's purpose wasn't to destroy an Apple product, but to figure out the tablet's bill of materials (BOM). Turns out it costs about the same as an iPad 1.
Acer rode the netbook wave to coast past Dell in the global PC market in 2009, but its stay at the number two spot was brief as Dell came back in the second quarter of 2010 to retake that position. If one fad led to Acer’s sudden rise in 2009, another triggered its slide past Dell in 2010.
A market research firm says that you and 7,899,999 other drivers will have an active subscription to OnStar, the automotive telematics communications system installed in General Motors vehicles, by the end of 2017. For the sake of comparison, OnStar claimed 5.1 million subscribers in 2010.
You don't necessarily need to rock a digital SLR camera to get the benefits of a CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor, in case you were wondering) image sensor. According to market research firm iSuppli, digital still cameras have started adopting CMOS senors in place of CCDs (charge-coupled devices) at a rapid rate. By 2013, iSuppli says there will be more CMOS point-n-shoot cameras than CCD equipped ones.
It turns out Microsoft was more than a little modest when it forecast worldwide sales of 5 million Kinect units in 2010. The actual number was much higher, with Microsoft selling 8 million units to retailers by January 4, 2011. The sell-through to consumers was 6.35 million units, according to data provided by market research firm iSuppli
