HighPoint, maker of high performance host bus adapters (HBAs) and other storage solutions, tells us it's now shipipng its latest SAS 6Gbps HBA, the RocketRAID 2711. Intended for workstations and entry-level servers, the RocketRAID 2711 is an external 4-port, SAS 6Gbps PCI-E 2.0 x8 RAID controller that supports up to four SAS/SATA devices.

Storage solutions and HBA (Host Bus Adapter) specialist HighPoint Technologies just let us know about its new RocketU 1144A, which is a four-port USB 3.0 add-in card. That in and of itself isn't terribly exciting, but it just so happens that this particular model is the industry's first/only four-port PCI Express Gen 2 x4, 20Gbps USB 3.0 SuperSpeed HBA. That's right, this thing packs four dedicated USB 3.0 ports, each one capable of a full 5Gbps for 20Gbps total.

HighPoint Announces First SATA 3.0 RAID Adaptor

First out the gate with a SATA 6 Gb/s RAID configuration card? HighPoint claims it is in announcing its RocketRAID 620 Series adaptor cards.

The RocketRAID 620 series has SATA 3.0 host adapters with a RAID 5 capability (backward compatible with SATA 3 Gb/s and 1.5 Gb/s). It’s got a PCI-Express 2.0 x1 host interface (compatible with PCI-Express 1.0), and it offers optimized storage performance and redundancy with RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, and JBOD.

The RocketRAID will allow hot plug and hot swap of storage devices, and has OCE/ORLM to expand storage capacity or migrate to different RAID levels.

HighPoint is offering two cards: the RocketRaid 620, with a price of $69.99, and the RocketRAID 622, with a price of $79.99. The 620 will come with SATA connectors, the 622 with eSATA connectors. Both cards are expected to ship this month.

HighPoint Announces SATA 6Gb Controller Availability

HighPoint Technologies unveiled the Rocket 600 series host adapter. The first of its kind it supports SATA 6Gb/s over PCI-Express 2.0

The Rocket 600 series cards boast 6Gb/s performance for two drives offering 500MB/s throughput. It uses standard SATA cables and connectors and features two types of backwards compatibility. First, it supports PCI-Express 1.0 as well as SATA 3Gb/s and 1.5Gb/s devices. Driver support was written in compliance with the AHCI standard so driver support is native to most operating systems.

The new series features two cards: the Rocket 620 and Rocket 622. The more expensive ($79.99) Rocket 622 offers eSATA ports instead of the SATA connectors on the $69.99 Rocket 620. The new adapters will be available late October into early November.

HighPoint RocketRAID 2640x4

Power users who want to take advantage of RAID are typically stuck between a rock and a hard place: their motherboard’s integrated RAID (the quality of which can vary wildly between chipsets) and expensive discrete controllers. HighPoint’s RocketRAID 2640x4 attempts to bridge the gap by offering better-than-onboard performance at a price much lower than fancier discrete cards.

As expected, the RocketRAID 2640x4, which has four SAS/SATA 3Gb/s ports but no onboard processor or memory, performed better than our test bed motherboard’s onboard RAID controller but couldn’t match the performance of the $450 Adaptec 5405, which boasts an onboard 1.2GHz processor and 256MB DDR2 cache.

Setting up the RocketRAID 2640x4 is simple: Drop in the card, hook up the drives, power up your computer, and hit Ctrl+H during boot. HighPoint’s BIOS makes creating and maintaining RAID a snap, and its Windows drivers are easy to install from the included disc.
