A look back at the weirdest PC adventure games

PC adventure games have seen a much-needed resurgence in the past couple of years, attracting newer audiences and developers who wish to get in on the fun. With renewed interest in the once-forgotten genre, we're seeing sequels to cult classic, new tales with familiar heroes, and in the case of some newcomers, those who dare to push the boundaries of convention. Going beyond simple detective stories, murder mysteries, and real-world trappings is welcome, and while we have a handful of modern examples doing so, the edgiest games were found in the genre's formative years. Some hardly made sense. Others ended up weirding out or offending and alienating audiences completely. We're celebrating the oddities of twenty of the strangest PC adventure games ever. Let's get weird.

Tim Schafer Asks Internet to Fund New Point and Click Adventure, Gets a Million Dollars

In under 24 hours, Double Fine made gaming (and Kickstarter) history. It all started when the funhouse that funnyman Tim Schafer built took to Kickstarter to ask for a few coins in the cup of a brand new point-and-click adventure game. And by “a few coins,” we mean $400,000. And so – no doubt fueled by fond memories of pirates who fight like dairy farmers – a legion of adoring fans buried the Kickstarter account in nickles, dimes, dollars, and priceless family heirlooms. The end result? It breezed past $400,000 in mere hours. And it's still going. As of writing, it reached $1,250,476, officially shattering Kickstarter's record for most donations in 24 hours and most backers. Which is all to say damn. Oh, and let's not forget that Notch is essentially playing Robin Hood to Psychonauts 2 – except with less arrows and more proof that there is justice in the universe after all. So yeah, all-in-all, we'd say Double Fine's had a pretty OK week or whatever, we guess.

One of the nice things about the PC as a gaming platform is that it pretty much has – in some form or another – every game ever. On the downside, however, that means heaps upon heaps of would-be classics get shoveled off the assembly line and straight into the fiery furnace of history. There are simply too many games, and without that all-important multi-million dollar advertising budget, it's all-too-easy to slip through the cracks.

Obviously, sifting through the aforementioned entire history of gaming isn't exactly feasible, but we've done our best to give these underappreciated classics a second shot at fame and glory. So, what does that mean for you, dear reader? How about 20 great games you've probably never played for (mostly) low prices? Have at them after the break.
