LG has released a new display technology that not even Rupert Murdoch can turn a blind eye to. With the e-reader consumer market continuing to grow, LG insists on not being outdone, and they may have succeeded.

LG unveiled an e-paper prototype about which, they claim is the largest produced using current technology. The 19-inch display uses a metal foil in exchange for the usual glass backing, which gives it its flexibility.

LG will likely be marketing this towards newspapers, and newspapers should be so lucky. Traditional e-readers, like Kindle and the Nook, stumble when it comes to executing the same comforting experience as print. Utilizing technology like this might help consumers more widely adopt the e-reading concept.

Wistron to Launch E-reader with Flexible Pull-out Display in 2010

The past couple of years have been a rollercoaster ride for Holland-based e-paper manufacturer Polymer Vision, the company best known for the Readius e-reader featuring its flexible e-paper technology. It was revealed last month that the board of directors of Taiwan-based Wistron had approved the acquisition of Polymer Vision, which had gone belly-up just a few months earlier.

According to a fresh report, Wistron is developing a 5- to 6-inch device featuring Polymer Vision’s flexible e-paper technology. Brian Chong, chief of product planning at Wistron, told Digitimes that the new device will borrow its design from the Readius e-reader. The plan is to launch it in 2010.

Polymer Vision’s Readius e-reader made heads turn when it made its first public appearance. But Polymer Vision soon found itself in financial disarray that culminated in bankruptcy, and the Readius never came close to being launched.

Display technology seems to be reading for some pretty amazing leaps if the flexible display prototypes from Hewlett-Packard, Philips and Samsung pan out. Besides being incredibly thin, these displays can be bent, stretched, even folded. But just how durable are they?

In an interesting twist on the game whack-a-mole, a video posted by luxury1004 on YouTube suggests pretty darn durable. The video shows a hammer being taken to a Samsung AMOLED display. The 2.8-inch, 20 micrometer thin display, playing a clip from Gran Turismo 5, comes out unscathed.
