Google's Chrome OS has garnered a lot of attention in recent times. Early glimpses, however, don't quite justify the hype. Many tech savants have already written off the operating system as nothing more than a sexed up browser. However, it is still a little early for obituaries as Google may have a trump hiding up its sleeve. McAfee is one company that acknowledges the possibility of Chrome OS living up to all the hype.
According to its latest report titled "2010 Threat Predictions,"the operating system may become a prime target for hackers in the eventuality of it becoming rife. The security company fears that Chrome OS's dependence on HTML5 - allows web apps both online and offline access to a user's PC - will endear it to hackers. "When a technology is widely used and adopted, the bad guys will latch onto it before the good guys do,"said McAfee's director of security research, David Marcus. McAfee also expects the popularity of Adobe software among hackers to soar to such levels that it may become the most targeted application software in 2010.
The report had a word of caution for users of social networking sites as well. They might become more vulnerable in the new year as such sites come under increased attack. The report specifically mentioned the use of URL-shortening services in spreading malicious links through the social web.

Toshiba today reached another milestone by launching a 64GB embedded NAND flash memory module, which ranks as the highest capacity yet achieved in the industry.
The 64GB part serves as the flagship chip in a new line of six embedded NAND flash memory modules, including 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB capacities. Each one offers full compliance with the latest e*MMC standard and are designed with a variety of consumer electronics in mind, such as digital video cameras, smartphones, mobile phones, and even netbooks.
On the technical side, the 64GB embedded devices combines sixteen 32Gb (gigabit) NAND chips fabricated with Tosbhia's 32nm manufacturing process. It also contains a dedicated controller
Boxee unveiled their new UI today, and it’s quite the departure. The entire front page has been redesigned, looking much more sophisticated and packing new functionality. The front page now focuses on the personal queue, featured content, and recommendations. The new menu system allows for local files to be integrated with streaming content (both free and payed). There will also be three new apps: The Escapist, Suicide Girls, and TV Guide to the Web Clicker.
The new interface was made possible by the switch from an OpenGL graphical engine to DirectX. Nvidia has even been helping Boxee optimize the interface for use on the Ion platform with Flash 10.1 and DXVA. No details on when the new beta will be available to users, but we can’t wait.
If you're looking for the fastest solid state drive available for your notebook or desktop PC, Micron says look no further than its RealSSD C300 drive. According to Micron, the new drive improves performance in a number of areas, including faster OS boot and hibernate times, speedier application loads, and peppier data transfer and file copying.
"The C300 SSD not only delivers on all the inherent advantages of SSDs -- improved reliability and lower power use -- but also leverages a finely tuned architecture and high-speed ONFI 2.1 NAND to provide a whole new level of performance," said Deal Klein, vice president of memory system development at Micron.
Micron says the performance gains are even better when paired with a SATA 6Gb/s interface. How much so? Try up to 355MB/s reads and up to 216MB/s writes. And in its own internal benchmarking, Micron's C300 scored 45,000 in PC Mark Vantage's HDD Suite.

Samsung today announced the industry's first mass production of its 30nm class, 32Gb (that's gigabit, not gigabyte), multi-level-cell (MLC) NAND memory with an an asynchronous DDR interface.
"With the new DDR MLC NAND, double data rate transmission can be achieved without increasing power consumption, giving designers a lot more latitude in introducing diverse CE devices," said Soo-In Cho, executive vice president and general manager of the Memory Division on Samsung.
According to Samsung, its DDR NAND chips will significantly improve read performance of mobile devices. The chips come capable of 133Mbps reads, and would replace SDR MLC NAND chips with read performance hovering around 40Mbps.
The company said its new chips can be used in SSDs for PCs, premium SD memory cards for smartphones, and in Samsung's proprietary moviNAND memory.
So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, goodbye: to YouTube’s API access. From now on, it’s through the front door or you’re not getting inside.
The word comes from Syabas, the maker of the Popcorn Hour set-top box. They, along with pretty much every set-top box maker, used YouTube’s API access to video’s which provides a neater integration to video than the regular Flash-based web interface. Besides better video, advertisements were also avoided. Good deal all around.
But no more. Google has changed the agreement for using API access--which it has a right to do. Google has decided to cut off access, except perhaps to a few of the powerful set-top makers, like Sony or Nintendo. Could be Google has figured out a new way to generate revenue, which certainly wasn’t coming from those who skipped the ads.
There's no way around it - if SSDs are to eventually replace mechanical hard drives, manufacturers have to find a way to increase capacity at a reasonable cost. So far, every SSD vendor has failed on both accounts, which is why we're excited to see OCZ release a 1TB SSD.
Also available in the more traditional 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB capacities, the new Colossus 3.5-inch SSD series brings no-holds barred performance to the scene, at least on paper. According to OCZ, each drive is capable of up to 260MB/s reads and writes, up to 220MB/s sustained writes, and up to 14,000 IOPS. That puts the Colossus right up there with the fastest spec'd drives on the market.
"The new Colossus Series is designed to boost desktop and workstation performance and is for high power users tht put a premium on speed, reliability, and maximum storage capacity," said Eugene Chang, VP of Product Management at OCZ. "The Colossus core-architecture is also available to enterprise clients with locked BOMs (build of materials) and customized firmware to match their unique applications."
A 1TB drive certainly makes headway on the capacity front, but the question is, how much will it cost? OCZ didn't say, though previous reports had the then-upcoming drive pegged at $2,500. Ouch.
Mozilla just launched the official gallery for this new framework last week. As you might expect, there aren't a ton of browser add-ons to play with. After a flurry of activity earlier this year, which seemingly saw a new SSD being released every week, we're beginning to see the SSD market cool down a little. But rest assured, manufacturers are still devoting R&D to the flash-based storage segment, as evidenced by G.Skill's new Falcon II 2.5-inch SSDs.
G.Skill says the Falcon II series comes equipped with the new Indilinx ECO controller. Seeing the ECO tag, the first thing that came to mind was what effect will that have on performance, and G.Skill rates its new SSDs at up to 220MB/s reads and 150MB/s writes (110MB/s writes on the 64GB model).
The drives, which are available in 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB capacities, also boast 64MB of DRAM cache and advanced wear leveling algorithms. G.Skill says the Falcon II series also feature the latest Indilinx 1819 version firmware, which purports to offer improved support for the Windows 7 TRIM command, something Intel's 34nm SSDs have struggled with as of late.
