When it comes to electronics, we love good old fashioned teardowns just like serial killers can't enough episodes of Dexter. The tech equivalent of Showtime's pathological superstar is iFixIt, the online source for do-it-yourself repair guides and parts. Their latest victim is Nintendo's 3DS handheld console, which they expose not only for our voyeuristic pleasure, but also to learn how easy or difficult it might be for the average Andy to perform in-house repairs.
An NEC representative acknowledged to us that Apple has made a lot of people happy with its 30-inch Cinema display, but said NEC's new 30-inch MultiSync PA301W-BK and PA301W-BK-SV monitors take performance to a whole new level. These are built for graphics professionals and enthusiasts who demand color accuracy, and to help get that, the latter includes NEC's SpectraView calibration software sensor puck.
A strong fourth quarter helped Vizio maintain its lead in the U.S. LCD TV market, which now claims a 27.6 percent market share, according to data released by iSuppli. Vizio shipped 2.9 million LCD TVs in the fourth quarter, up 78.9 percent from 1.6 million in the third quarter, and has been sitting on top for all of 2010. Coming in second place is Samsung, which claims a 20.2 percent share of the market.

Nintendo's 3DS handheld console is a hit, at least in Japan where customers waited in line to purchase the next-generation game player, Bloomberg reports. There were around 2,000 anxious gamers waiting outside Yodobashi Camera Co.'s store in Akihabara, Tokyo, all wanting to get their mitts on the console that had sold-out on preorder and at other electronics stores. Fans had begun lining up 10PM the night before it went on sale.
The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) said it was another record year
The hype surrounding OLED technology has somewhat settled down in recent months, instead giving way to LED-backlit LCD displays that are cheaper to produce. Lest you forget completely about OLED, however, Sony this week announced a pair of OLED monitors designed for professionals. The 17-inch and 25-inch monitors are part of Sony's new reference-grade BVM-E series and are supposed to be on par with CRTs in color accuracy. Put your drink down before hitting the jump and taking a peek at the price tags.
Wednesday marked the release of LG's Cinema 3D TV in Korea. According to LG, it's the world's first 3D TV officially certified as "flicker-free," which was granted by Intertek and TÜV, two certification agencies in Europe. The reason this matters, says LG, is that it virtually eliminates dizziness and eye fatigue that some people have experienced with other 3D displays.
Acer's trying to play all sides of the field with its new P5403 projector, Sporting an SXGA+ (1400x1050) resolution, Acer says the P5403 is equally adept at displaying spreadsheets as it is at beaming highly detailed images, and it can do 120Hz 3D as well. Advanced lamp technology with illumination of up to 3500 ANSI lumens and a 3000:1 contrast ratio means the P5403 shouldn't choke on text-heavy presentations, and with an optimized 5-segment color wheel, Acer promises high color accuracy.
HP went back to the drawing board for its TouchSmart series and came up with something new for the redesign. Unlike previous generation models, the latest additions boast a 60-degree reclining display, which is a step in the right direction in making these all-in-ones function more like a traditional monitor. The new line is represented by the TouchSmart 610 Consumer PC and TouchSmart 9300 Elite Business PC, both of which sport a 23-inch HD display that tilts forward up to five degrees.
