We had a feeling Dell might soon be releasing its Precision M4600 and M6600 laptops when a leaked product manual made waves on the Web, and it turns out we were right. Dell today officially announced these two new models, which the OEM is pitching as the world's most powerful 15.6-inch (M4600) and 17.3-inch (M6600) mobile workstations. Let's take a peek at the specs.
It looks at though Dell's Wi-Fi only Streak 7 tablet PC is finally available in the U.S. after having gone on sale in the U.K. earlier this week. Dell hasn't yet formally announced U.S. availability, but a quick peek at mega e-tailer Amazon.com shows that it's in stock and shipping now, provided you have the requisite $380 to drop on the Wi-Fi only device.
The countdown timer on Alienware's 'Discover' portal teasing visitors to "be the first to know" has finally reached zero. So what was the big news? An Alienware triple-play consisting of three new laptops designed to redefine mobile gaming. These include the enhanced Alienware M11x R3, the new M14x, and the soon to be available M18x.
There has been a sudden spike in rumors of upcoming Alienware notebooks over the past few days. Evidence confirming the existence of the new notebooks has not only appeared in fairly run-of-the-mill forms like leaked docs and premature hints on the vendor's website, but we have also seen a pre-release review of one of the rumored notebooks – the M14x. But if there was still some doubt about the existence of the all new Alienware M14x, the emergence of the user and factory service manuals for the laptop on Dell's support site should be enough to put them to rest. While industry pundits argue over what effect tablets are having on PC sales, companies like Dell continue to ship new models in the familiar tower form factor. Such is the case with Dell's new Precision T1600, a tower workstation that's now shipping to customers worldwide. Because it's a workstation, the components are geared more towards work (like AutoCAD) than play, and should you need to poke around inside, all the hardware comes wrapped in a tool-less chassis.
Last week, a senior Dell executive dismissed the iPad’s chances of enterprise glory, citing concerns about its high price. But he seemed quite confident of his company’s “considered approach to tablets.” He touted Dell’s decision of giving people a lot of choices through a “multi-OS” (Android and Windows 7) tablet strategy. However, if a new rumor is to be believed, the Windows 7 component of that multi-OS strategy is unlikely to appear before fall. Hit the jump for more.
It's still too early to call it a 'Fusion frenzy,' but we are seeing an increasing number of notebooks being built around AMD's Fusion platform. One of the newest entries is Dell's M102z ultraportable. The M102z rocks an AMD E-350 processor with AMD Radeon HD 6310 graphics and a slightly-larger-than-netbook 11.6-inch screen.
It doesn't appear Apple is having any trouble moving iPad tablets. The recently released iPad 2 sold out almost as soon as it went on sale, and there's now a waiting period if you place an order with Apple. Be that as it may, a senior Dell executive says the iPad has no place in the enterprise because of its high price, at least when you toss in the necessary peripherals, and that Android will lead eventually lead the way.
The iPad-spawned media tablet category might be cannibalizing netbook sales, but Taiwan’s Asus, which launched the netbook category in 2007 with the Eee PC 701 and is one of the companies worst affected by this sales cannibalization, isn’t ready to abandon the category just yet. If a new Digitimes report is to be believed, Asustek will soon launch a sub-$250 netbook in cooperation with Intel in a bid to resurrect what has to be its favorite category of PCs.
