With PC vendors focusing on Ultrabooks these days, the market for cache SSDs is expected to explode in the near future. Joining the cache SSD fray is the Crucial m4 mSATA SSD. Actually, it can not only serve as a cache SSD, but can also be used as a primary storage solution.
What is it with SATA 6Gb/s SSDs and blue screen of death (BSOD) errors? First it was only SSDs with the SandForce SF-2000 series controller that were making users feel blue, but earlier this month Crucial also acknowledged a BSOD issue of its own. A firmware bug was found to be causing the company’s M4 SSD to restart every hour “after approximately 5,000 hours of actual ‘on time’ use.” The company promised a firmware update to rectify the problem sometime during the week of January 16, 2012. That firmware update is now available.
It doesn't matter if Bill Gates ever said it or not, what matters is we've long known that 640K of RAM isn't anywhere near enough. For some people, neither is 2GB or even 4GB. And if you're a power user or a master of content creation, you may need much, much more. Perhaps this is why Crucial decided to upgrade several of its Ballistix memory lines with 8GB modules.
There’s no denying that SSDs are blazing fast and an all-around pleasure to have in your system, but for many folks, being limited to 128GB or 256GB just isn’t going to cut it. Enter Crucial: today, the memory maker announced the “Adrenaline Solid State Cache Solution,” which hopes to solve that problem (as the name implies). It could’ve been called the “SSD Band-Aid;” it’s basically an itty-bitty SSD that teams up with your HDD to deliver quick access speeds while keeping the high storage capabilities of traditional drives intact.
We're all about receiving free performance upgrades, which is exactly what Crucial's offering with the latest firmware update for its m4 solid state drive series. The new firmware supercharges the m4 series with faster boots, improved write latency, better PCMark Vantage benchmark scores, and other enhancements just a few mouse clicks away.
There's not need to be embarrassed for owning an old -- really old -- PC that barely gets from point A to point B without coughing up a hairball. There's something to be said for that kind of loyal commitment and frugal tenacity (do we even need to mention gas prices?). But hey, maybe it's time to think about moving on. If it's fated to be, you could win a new rig for doing nothing more than sharing your name and email address with Crucial, and a few details about your one-legged system.
As power users, we rarely, if ever, follow the same path as mainstream users do. We build our PCs from scratch, we know what technology to invest in and which ones to avoid, and rather than wait for our rigs to require a complete overhaul, we keep things running smooth with well timed upgrades. But even so, every once in awhile we reach the end our ropes where it makes more sense to start from scratch than to plug in more parts to an aging system. According to a new study, that time typically comes around every four and a half years.
