How does Microsoft, one of the highest-profile technology companies in the world, create a new, similarly high-profile piece of hardware like the Surface Tablet without anybody in the industry getting a whiff of it? Simple: you lock the designers working on the project into secretive underground facilities with security measures similar to what you'd find at a bank or sensitive data centers.
One of my earliest gaming memories involves trading illegal goods, hunting down pirates, mining asteroids and generally gallivanting around the galaxy as the intrepid Commander Jameson in the Amiga version of Elite. Unfortunately, the Amiga was killed off soon afterwards -- or so we thought. It turns out that the Amiga brand, kind of like Cthulu, was just biding its time. Commodore USA just announced it's releasing a new small form factor PC sporting the Amiga name, but packing a much, much bigger punch than its predecessor.
Whether it involves magnet links, Swedish domain names or founders fleeing to other countries, the digital buccaneers over at the Pirate Bay have never been one to back away from a fight with authorities. Tensions have been rising after SOPA/PIPA and the MegaUpload take down, and Pirate Bay's operators have been feeling the pressure. As such, they recently unveiled a new plan designed to protect against government seizure: combining cheap radio equipment, low-cost computers and flying drones to create airborne servers.
If data protection ever finds itself in need of a spokesman, we'd sign up to be its crazy street corner preacher in a minute. Oh, wait. The position's already filled! A YouTube user by the name of susyj87 can proudly boast that she's the most hardcore data backup enthusiast around after getting a sleeve tattoo comprised of the Facebook profile pictures of 152 of her "closest" friends. Sorry to break the bad news, closest Facebook friend number 153.
