It hasn't even been a full month since we ran our massive
PowerColor has proven to be quite the tease these past few weeks by leaking pictures of custom cooled AMD Radeon HD 7000 Series graphics cards, including one with a waterblock. More recently, PowerColor posed a dual-fan Radeon HD 7970 videocard for a single-shot photo shoot, which apparently served as a short precursor to its official debut.
You don't have to be a spendthrift to shop a system from a boutique builder. That's not to say you can't still configure a professionally built system that costs as much as a Kia, it's just no longer required. Even liquid cooling setups are fair game for frugal enthusiasts. Enter Origin PC's new Frostbyte 360 liquid cooling system (LCS). Origin PC claims it's reaching speeds up to 5.2GHz using the Frostbyte 360, and starting at $1,599 you can grab a Genesis system configured with the new cooler.
Thanks to the wonder of social networking, we're able to catch an early glimpse of PowerColor's upcoming 'LCS HD7970' graphics card. PowerColor posted a photo of the liquid cooled card on its Facebook page with a promise that "Something cool is coming soon!" That "something cool" is a Radeon HD 7970 videocard stripped of its air cooled heatsink and replaced with a single-slot full cover water block from EK Waterblocks.
Plan on buying a Cooler Master heatsink sometime soon? If so, you could be buying into a new cooling design the company’s dubbed “Vertical Vapor Chamber Technology.” Cooler Master claims that by tinkering with the traditional heatsink design, Vertical Vapor Chambers run cooler and quieter than traditional cooling solutions.
We first spied Corsair's Link software at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas...
Not all boutique system builders have the stomach to overclock, let alone selling a system that's been pushed to 5.7GHz. Not only is Origin PC boosting its top-tier factory overclock option on its Genesis desktop line, but it will be backed by lifetime 24/7 technical support for no additional cost, a change in support policy that applies to all Origin PC desktops and laptops.
In Greek mythology, Erebus is a primordial deity representing the personification of darkness. Given that overclocking was once considered a dark art, we suppose it's only fitting that iBuyPower would name a liquid cooled gaming system begging to be overclocked after the god of darkness. New and improved for the modern worshipper, the Erebus GT is similar to iBuyPower's first generation system, but has been redesigned with a smaller footprint.
The overclocking world caught its first glimpse of Thermaltake's Frio Extreme air cooler back in June when it was unveiled at the Computex convention in Taiwan. Why it took so long to officially launch is anyone's guess, but it's here now and ready to help overclockers push the limits of their parts with a cooling capacity of up to 250W and support for both AMD and Intel platforms.
Live fast and play hard. That's the sort of motto you'll find exemplified in old school water cooling circles, the ones where wielding a pre-built kit or self-contained liquid cooler might earn you a wedgie. There's a certain satisfaction that comes from building your own water cooling setup, just as there is with building your own PC, and it's a market still being served by folks like Danger Den, which just announced the release of its highest performing CPU waterblock to date, the DD-M6 CPU Block.
