Good news if you were one of the unlucky few who have been experiencing color output problems ever since Microsoft rolled out its major dashboard update back in December 2011. A new mandatory update is supposed to kick the unwanted "colorspace issue" to the curb so you can watch videos without washed out colors and poor black levels, which were the most common complaints.
The electronic surgeons at iFixIt point out that they don't break gadgets, they tear them apart. We love when they do, because then we can spy the innards of expensive tech gear laid bare without ruining our own equipment, allowing us to live vicariously through their teardowns. This week iFixIt took apart Sony's new PlayStation Vita handheld console, which turned out to be surprisingly easy to service.
Hulu Plus found a new way to be streamed into your living room. Nintendo today announced it has teamed up with the streaming video service so that Wii owners can now subscribe to and access Hulu Plus for $8/month and instantly stream popular TV shows like Family Guy, Glee, The Office, Modern Family, and more, as well as hundreds of movies, on their Wii console.
January was a slow month overall for videogame hardware and software, with combined sales (including accessories) dropping from $1.14 billion in January 2011 to 750.6 million, a 34 percent year-over-year slide, according to data released by market research firm NPD Group. Be that as it may, Microsoft's Xbox 360 console maintained its lead in the U.S. console market for its 13th straight month.
Electronic Arts has apparently come to the conclusion that the Wii is not a suitable platform for future versions of its Tiger Woods golf game and will not be releasing Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 on Nintendo's motion control console. It wasn't all that long ago when the Wii was the most popular platform for the Tiger Wood series, so it's a bit surprising EA has decided to skip it altogether.
When you flip on your Sony PlayStation 3 console today (assuming you own one and plan on using it), you'll be prompted to download a new software update, version 4.10, which happens to be the first one of 2012 for the PS3. You'll also be asked to accept a change to Sony's Terms of Service, which primarily deals with rebranding your "PSN Account" to a "Sony Entertainment Network Account" (SEN).
Nintendo President Satoru Iwata announced a new digital network for the 3DS handheld and upcoming Wii U consoles that will finally bring the company's online operations up to par with its competitors, or so Nintendo hopes. It's called the "Nintendo Network" service, a platform that, among other things, will let gamers grab hold of gamertags. Welcome to the Internet, Nintendo, do stay awhile, would you?
With the Consumer Electronics Show now in the rear-view mirror, it's time to start looking forward to other tech conventions like the upcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), which will kick off this summer. It's possible Microsoft will announce its next generation game console at E3, and in the process dispel or confirm the many rumors surrounding the Xbox 720.
Nintendo offered a couple of excuses as to why it posted significant losses for the April-December period when one year prior the numbers were looking pretty rosy. The house that Super Mario built got beat up during the nine months ended December 31, 2011, with sales totaling 556.2 billion yen, or $7.2 billion, down nearly a third from the same time period in 2010.
The Capcom Digital Collection is a marvelous medley of eight digital Capcom titles crammed into a single Xbox 360 disc. If you were to download these titles separately via Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA), it'd set you back a Benjamin (combined). The all encompassing disc will run $40, saving you 60 percent, and potentially some valuable hard disk space if you happen to be running low.
