Hardcore enthusiasts take overclocking beyond the PC, and we're not talking about smartphones. Things like toaster ovens and vacuum cleaners all qualify for added geek cred, but why stop there? We stumbled upon the only shoe in the world that has us wondering what we can tweak.
You love t-shirts. I love t-shirts. We’re all geeks, and if there’s one thing that geeks love more than random Youtube vdeos, it’s t-shirts related to internet memes/awesome art/random life musings. It’s true! And that’s why this week’s web app of the week has nothing to do with software, making your life better, improving your ability to do offline activities on the web, or any of that usual freeware-related nonsense.
Nope. This week is all about your purse and/or wallet. And your general sense of fashion. There are a t-o-n ton of various sites on the Internet that you can use to purchase interesting and cool-looking duds at a relatively low price. That’s not the point here.
It's a lot harder to both find these sites and scan them all on a daily basis for new stuff to wear. And how can you be sure that what you’re buying is the best style choice for how you want to look? What if a better t-shirt exists, at a lower price, and you just didn’t realize it was out there? Waiting for you to pick it up!
Seiko is trying to bring digital watches back in style, and to help do that, the company is equipping new models with e-ink displays.
This isn't the first time Seiko has gone this route, having used e-ink in a handful of limited edition watches for the ladies a few years back. They never really took off, which Seiko hopes is only because it was an idea slightly ahead of its time.
These second-gen e-ink watches sport an active matrix display that allows the screen to "actively" refresh itself whenever needed. The battery is only used when changing the display, so in theory, these suckers should run for long, long periods of time.
It's also equipped with a solar cell, and the movement is radio controlled so that it receives its time from an atomic clock. It all looks pretty promising (and geeky), and if the recent ebook price war is any indication, these things might actually end up being affordable too.
One way to tell the world to "Kick my ass and mug me" is to simply wear a custom shirt emblazoned with that very plea. Or you can walk around dark alleys and other areas you have no place being toting your $600 iPad front and center in your Syte Shirt's pouch. Of course, the startup's designers have an entirely different pitch, which goes a little something like this:
"Syte Shirt manufacturers an interactive shirt that lets you safely carry the iPad hands-free on your chest while allowing you and others to fully interact with the iPad through a transparent window," Syte Shirt's marketing team writes. "Not only is it an accessory, the shirt is also a fashion statement for those that want to show off cool designs, photos, movies, or animations while trotting around town. It's the first shirt that has a constantly changing design!"
Syte Shirt lists several examples of how you can use your new clothing accessory, including playing movies or firing up interactive games for your kids while keeping your hands free, or broadcast a football game while enjoying a tailgate party. Seriously.
"The possibilities of this product are only limited by the imagination of its users, and I really think we're going to be amazed by the ideas our customers come up with for this great product," Syte Shirt founder Joseph A. Young writes.
When we first broke this story, though it came from a credible source, it was a bit hard to believe. Microsoft is in the software business, so what is all this talk about softwear? Turns out it’s all true and the official Microsoft website for the product line has now launched. The project is being managed in collaboration with thinkcommon.com, and the designs certainly are… interesting.
The majority of the shirts are tributes to the olden days of MS-DOS, but my personal favorite is “The Misdemeanor”. This classy tee (shown above) sports Bill Gate’s mug shot, and is sure to make you a hit at parties (not guaranteed by me or Microsoft). The shirts supposedly retail for a very reasonable $10, and the website can help you find a store near you.
So is this brilliant marketing or painful to look at?
Advertising Age (via Cnet) reports that Microsoft and rapper Common are teaming up with ad agency Crispin Porter & Bogusky to put classic Microsoft imagery from the '80s and modern remixes on T-shirts. Yes, the line will be called "Softwear by Microsoft."
