If you ever want to experience true elation, try swapping out a fragmented hard disk drive (HDD) that's bogging down performance from an otherwise well equipped PC for a performance oriented solid state drive (SSD). The difference can be night and day, depending on how slow your HDD is. It's also a costly upgrade that usually results in downgraded storage capacity, hence why HDDs are still the popular storage medium of choice. But for how long?
There was a time when hulking computer towers were all the rage, and for some, they still are. By and large, however, the general shift in computing has been towards smaller, space saving form factors. Hoping to capitalize on that trend is Cooler Master, which recently announced its Elite 120 Advanced chassis pitched as "a modern solution for the space conscious" builder.
Case, cooling, and peripheral maker Cooler Master has come up with a successor to its Silent Pro M line of power supplies, the new and aptly named Silent Pro M2 Series. Picking up where the original left off, Cooler Master claims it made improvements to "each aspect" of the PSU, including the addition of a 3.3v DC-to-DC board to increase overall energy efficiency and newer high quality capacitors.
As we approach the limit of how much juice power supplies can realistically pull from the wall, PSU makers are turning their attention to other differentiating factors, like efficiency. Zalman is one such company taking this approach, and has just unveiled its new ZM1250 Platinum "extreme efficiency" power supply. As the name implies, the 1,250W PSU is 80 Plus Platinum certified, partially the result of using high quality components like 105C solid capacitors.
"Short" and "Full Tower" aren't a pair of descriptors that typically go together, but then again, Lian Li claims its new PC-V750 computer case isn't your typical enclosure. The PC-V750 is a "short full tower," as Lian Li describes it, and if you build a system inside it, the power supply goes in front, a design decision that allows it to "hold the hardware that enthusiasts desire while keeping a smaller footprint."
If you've been following the PC scene for awhile, you may recall Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) beating Intel to the punch (if only by a hair) in getting a 1GHz CPU (an Athlon "Thunderbird") into the hands of consumers back in 2000. Here we are more than a decade later and AMD's still talking up its 1GHz achievements, only this time those bragging rights are related ot its GPUs, the newest one being the just launched Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition graphics card built around the company's Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture.
Cooler Master this week rolled out another aggressive looking computer case, the CM Storm Stryker. This latest model is a full tower enclosure and the second model in its class to include a sturdy carrying handle, just in case you want to pack this thing with high end hardware and then lug it around to LAN parties (or from room to room, as it were) "with relative ease." It's relative, because trying to carry a hulking computer case without a handle will test both your strength and agility.
As far as Adata is concerned, an influx of motherboards sporting built-in mSATA slots is going to create a demand for mSATA solid state drives (SSDs). The idea behind mSATA SSDs is to provide a fast cache solution to aid the primary storage device, typically a mechanical hard disk drive (HDD), to achieve system performance comparable to running a standalone SSD at a fraction of the cost. Towards that end, Adata today announced the launch of its XPG SX300 and Premier Pro SP300 mSATA SSDs.
