Baidu Turns Browser Vendor

The powers that be at China’s leading search engine Baidu are taking a textbook approach to business expansion, turning to Google’s Internet Dominance for Dummies whenever they are short on ideas. Taking a cue from Google, the Chinese web giant has developed a web browser of its own. After months of internal testing, Baidu on Monday began offering a public beta version of its browser.

zuck According to reports in the Chinese media, Facebook has signed a deal with China's largest search engine, Baidu. The agreement would give rise to a jointly-owned social networking site available in the Chinese mainland. The government would need to approve the deal, which could mean a long wait until we know what the final product would look like. One thing's for sure though, it won't be Facebook.

Baidu Looks to Get on Chinese Android Phones

Traditionally, phones running Google's Android operating system have relied on Google's search engine out of the box. But China's homegrown search engine, Baidu, is trying to get several Chinese manufacturers to build their service into the phones. Baidu wants a Baidu search widget prominently displayed on Android phones. These models would only be sold in China.

Android is still a small part of the Chinese smartphone market. Last year, only 0.4% of phones sold in the country ran Android. Baidu wants to get a part of the market before Android starts taking off. They want people to associate Android phones with their search engine, which holds the vast majority of the search market in China.

Baidu would not disclose which manufacturers they were in discussions with, but we imagine big names like Lenovo and Huawei are on the list. We saw the Moto Backflip stateside with Yahoo search instead of Google, so apparently anything is possible.

Google’s face-off with Chinese authorities and subsequent exit from that country left local search provider Baidu with virtually no competition. In fact, Google’s exit couldn’t have come at a better time for China’s top online search provider, which was beginning to face some stiff resistance Google.

Baidu just posted its first quarter results and they seem to suggest that it is doing a good job of devouring around 40 percent of the market that had Google written all over it until not a long ago. Compared to the same period last year, its net income shot up by 165% to $70.4 million during the first quarter. Revenues also witnessed a year-over-year increase of 59.6 percent to reach $189.6 million.

Leading Chinese Search Engine Sues US Domain Registrar Over Hacking

China's leading search engine Baidu has pinned the entire blame for the recent attack on its site on American domain registrar Register.com. The hackers, who identified themselves as the Iranian Cyber Army, had disrupted Baidu's services for hours on January 12. They diverted all traffic meant for Baidu.com – the Chinese site (Baidu.cn) wasn't affected – to a page maintained by them.

Baidu has wasted little time in slamming Register.com with a lawsuit for "gross negligence" on the latter's part. It said in a statement that the registrar's negligence abetted the attack on its site. But the domain registrar believes that Baidu has no case against it and its suit is without merit.

"Register.com takes cyber-terrorism very seriously and we are working closely with federal law enforcement officials who are investigating this crime as well as the recent similar attacks on Twitter and Google," a spokesperson for Register.com said. The same group that hacked Baidu had also attacked Twitter last month.

China's Largest Search Engine Hacked by "Iranian Cyber Army"

Sorry Baidu users, your search engine is down for the count (in parts of the world, anyway), at least for the time being. No, a late night watchman didn't trip over the power cord in a data center, and instead the outage appears to be the work of Iranian hackers.

Baidu, China's most popular search engine with a market share exceeding 77 percent, now shows a page saying "This site has been hacked by Iranian Cyber Army." These are the same dudes who also attacked and defaced Twitter just a few weeks ago using the same method: DSN cache poisoning.

Sounds toxic, but rest assured, no chemicals were used. DNS cache poisoning involves corrupting a DNS table by replacing an IP with a malicious address, which in this case is the Iranian Cyber Army page.

Why the hackers targeted Baidu is not yet known.

China Rebukes Google, Baidu for Not Filtering Pornographic Content

The Chinese government lambasted 19 Internet companies for not doing enough to curb pornography on the internet. It published the names of 19 companies, including Google and premier Chinese search engine Baidu, in an online statement on Monday. The Chinese government says that it wants a cleaner internet that can facilitate the proper development of minors.

The Chinese government also explained as to why each of the 19 companies figured in the list. For instance, Google is on the list as it hasn’t placed any filters to prevent pornographic content from appearing on its image search website.

Although Google had said in its riposte on Tuesday that the search engine enjoys no control over “the billions of pages in our index,” China’s Xinhua News Agency is reporting that all websites that were rebuked by the Chinese government, including Google and Baidu, have submitted their apologies.
