In need of a pick-me-up to cure those mid-week blues? Here's a three-for-one announcement from Asus, which unveiled a trio of gamer-friendly products at the Consumer Electronics Show, all rolled into a single press release. New items include a dual-band wireless gigabit router (EA-N66), ROG Rampage IV Formula/ThunderFX gaming motherboard, and Xonar Phoebus soundcard set.
Nearly three out of four people rocking an Intel X79 system are sitting pretty on top of an Asus brand motherboard. That's the conclusion you can draw from the company's claim that its X79 series motherboards have gone on to grab a global market share of 70 percent of all boards built around Intel's enthusiast chipset, and it isn't the only one Asus says it's dominating.

The introduction of Intel's Cedar Trail platform might spark some renewed interest in the netbook category, especially as buyers looking for an affordable and highly portable machine grapple with whether to overspend on a underpowered/under-equipped tablet PC, or really overspend on a newfangled Ultrabook. A new generation of netbooks could be just the thing these folks are looking for, and Asus will try to entice them with its upcoming Eee PC Flare series.
Android modders have hit the ground running in 2012 with a call to arms after discovering that Asus is using an encrypted booloader on its Eee Pad Transformer Prime, effectively preventing users from easily rooting and modifying their swank new slate. It's not an unprecedented move by Asus, but typically manufacturers refrain from locking down Wi-Fi only tablets, reserving the practice primarily for smartphones.
It seems there are as many questions surrounding the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime tablet as there are answers. When will it be available? Will the combination of an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor and Google's Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) result in the best tablet money can buy? And when will Asus roll out an ICS update, anyway? All fair questions, and the answers are still mostly fuzzy.
Even though ultrabooks have managed very little in the two months that they have been around, chipmaker Intel and its PC vendor chums remain hopeful. And to be fair they are right in doing so as there is still a long way to go before we can start judging the category. While most people feel that the category could do with better specs and pricing, there are those who believe ultrabooks with touchscreens are all that is needed for a turnaround.
To be honest, between Z68 this and Sandy Bridge-e that, we haven’t had much time to check out many of AMD's latest motherboard offerings.
