Mobile malware on the Android platform is on the rise.

Remember Symbian? Few people actually care about the mobile platform these days, and that's evidenced by the reduction of mobile malware aimed at Symbian, which dropped from 29 percent in 2011 to 19 percent in 2012, according F-Secure's latest Mobile Threat Report (PDF). Android, on the other hand, is more popular than it's ever been, and as a result, 79 percent of all mobile malware is targeted at Google's open source OS.

Android 4.x Finally Leapfrogs Gingerbread

By itself, Android 2.3.x (Gingerbread) is still the most popular version of Google's open source OS.

Google first announced Android 4.1 Jelly Bean around 8 months ago, and after all this time, the latest version (Android 4.1 and 4.2) has slow rolled itself onto 16.5 percent of all Android devices. Gingerbread (Android 2.3.x) is still the most prevalent version of Android, accounting for 44.1 percent of all Android gadgets, which is based on those that have accessed Google Play within the past 14 days, Google reports.

Anyone looking for an 8” Smartphone? When you’re this big, they call you mister.

When Huawei announced it was releasing a 6.1-inch Smartphone, we couldn’t stop ourselves from poking fun at it. The prospect of holding such a massive device up to our ear made us question who would buy such a device, and our readers more or less agreed in the comments. Huawei clearly marketed its new device as a phone, however Samsung is taking a slightly different approach. Today the company announced the Galaxy Note 8.0, featuring an 8-inch 1280 x 800 (189ppi) TFT display. Is it a phone? Is it a tablet? You be the judge.

HP releases the first of many tablets planned for 2013.

HP’s mishandling of the Palm acquisition will go down in history as one of the worst mobile plays in the history of technology, but the company has licked its wounds and is finally ready to give it another shot. Today, HP has announced its very first Android product: the Slate 7. The price tag on the company’s new tablet certainly catches the eye, however the specs leave much to be desired.

Mobile World Congress is underway in Barcelona, and while it is intended to be a smartphone focused event, tablets seem to be stealing all the headlines. Lenovo has added 3 new tablets to its 2013 lineup, and the entry level model bears a striking resemblance to Google's Nexus 7. It appears as though Lenovo believes they stand a better chance of wrestling market share from the budget / mid-range category, rather than going after Samsung and Apple on the high end.

Android is by far the most popular smartphone platform on the planet, according to data by the IDC.

You can't really call it a smartphone battle royale when the only armies on the battlefield are Android and iOS. Google's open source platform closed out 2012 with a 70.1 percent share of the global smartphone market by way of 159.8 million handset shipments, making it by far the most popular platform. Next in line is iOS (iPhone), a distant second with 47.8 million iPhone sales to claim a 21 percent share of the market. Together, the two platforms accounted for just over 9 out of every 10 smartphones sold last year.

At last month’s Consumer Electronics Show, Android virtualization startup BlueStacks announced that its “App Player” software, which lets people enjoy Android apps on their PCs, was coming to Microsoft’s latest desktop operating system. Security firm discovers a pair of malicious apps in Google Play that try to exploit Windows' AutoRun feature.

Do you talk to your PC? If so, be careful what secrets you share with your system, you never know who might be listening. We're not being paranoid here, Security firm Kaspersky has discovered a pair of malicious programs in Google Play that are designed to infect PCs, where it then gets busy tapping into the audio system so that it can record the victim. The sound files are then sent to the malware's author. What's the point?

Samsung chooses celebrity endorsements over attack ads at Super Bowl 2013.

Samsung is in a position of dominance from a purely global standpoint, however in the US they are locked in fierce combat with Apple, continuously trading places as the number one smartphone maker. The Super Bowl is a prime (albeit expensive) opportunity to capture consumers attention, and Samsung choose to ditch its now legendary attack ads in favor of something a bit more mainstream.

A journalist claims Android is popular because it's cheap, not because it's good.

Sam Biddie, a senior staff writer at Gizmodo, stoked the flames of debate with an article that proposes the reason why Android is so popular and able to outsell the iPhone is because there are a lot of "marginal" devices that "can be sold like bags of Doritos or bargain-bin sweaters." He's talking about the low-end Android handsets that are priced to move, rather than high-end phones like the Galaxy S III.
