AMD will spend two-thirds less on wafers from Globalfoundries under terms of a renegotiated deal.

Everyone seems to be tightening their belts these days, including Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). Strapped for cash and in the midst of an ambitious restructuring effort, the Sunnyvale chip designer amended its Wafer Supply Agreement (WSA) with Globalfoundries. Under terms of the revised deal, AMD is only on the hook to purchase a third of the wafers it previously agreed to, though it comes at the cost of a hefty fine.

It's been recently rumored that Intel is taking steps towards a socket-less future, perhaps sooner than you think. The rumor originates from a Japanese website, which reported that Broadwell, the 14nm successor to next year's Haswell, would not come in an LGA package. Such a scenario would effectively neuter the enthusiast DIY market, and AMD wants no part of the castration process, at least not in the near future.

The wait is over, Far Cry 3 is here and available on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and of course our favorite gaming platform, the PC. To kick things off on a high note, both AMD and Nvidia have released new GPU drivers -- AMD Catalyst 12.11 Beta and Nvidia GeForce 310.70 -- that promise to deliver big performance gains in Far Cry 3 (by as much as 38 percent in some cases), as well as a few other titles.
