Faulty power cords distributed with select Lenovo notebooks could overheat and catch fire
Lenovo is recalling more than 500,000 AC power cords distributed in the U.S. and another 44,000 in Canada due the risk of overheating and burning or catching fire. The potentially affected power cords were manufactured from February 2011 to December 2011 and distributed with the company's B, G, S, U, V, and Z Series of IdeaPad laptops, as well as its B, G, and V Series of non-IdeaPad laptops.
Tis the season of the low cost laptop, and if you're looking for a portable system on the cheap, you have a growing number of choices. You won't find them in the Apple Store, of course, but you will find Windows laptops in the $200 range, including a recently reduced Asus X205TA model selling for just $170 at the Microsoft Store. In response, Chromebook models are expected to be even more affordable than they already are with Asus and Lenovo both reportedly planning to release $149 Chromebook models.
Is it a compact all-in-one PC or a massive tablet?
Over the past two days, Maximum PC Online Managing Editor Jimmy Thang has been scouring the fairly busy Blizzcon 2014 show floor in Anaheim California for stuff worth writing home about. One of the many (video) postcards he has sent us features a new all-in-one (AIO) PC from Lenovo. And lest you make the mistake of thinking of it as a run-of-the-mill AIO device, let us make it clear that we’re talking about an AIO PC of the portable tabletop variety.
It was easier to make an argument in favor of Chromebooks as early as a month ago. There's plenty they can't do, but they're cheap and sufficient for basic computing tasks, like surfing the web. They're also nice tools if you're heavily tied into Google's ecosystem. Several vendors have jumped on board the Chromebook bandwagon, and rumor has it Lenovo will offer an ultra-affordable Chromebook model of its own next year, but has their time in the spotlight come and gone?
No. 1 PC maker hasn't yet figured out the smartphone market
There aren't many people who would question Lenovo's PC strategy, especially after recently achieving a record high PC market share of nearly 20 percent while also becoming the top PC+tablet supplier. However, Lenovo's finding out that competing in the smartphone sector is perhaps a bit more challenging as sales of mobile devices decreased 6 percent year-over-year to $1.6 billion during the company's second fiscal quarter.
Back in January, it was announced that Google would be selling its Motorola division to Lenovo pending approval from authorities. Google, which had acquired the mobile company for $12.5 billion in 2012, was looking to sell it and now that all parties involved have signed off on the deal, Lenovo has acquired Motorola for $2.91 billion.
Is there a more appropriate name for a line of tablet PCs than Yoga? While you ponder that one, take note that Lenovo just expanded its Yoga Tablet 2 family with the new Yoga 13-inch Tablet 2 with Windows. Joining its 8-inch and 10-inch Windows-based brethren, Lenovo's latest slate is not only the largest, but also the most flexible in that it boasts a new mode -- Hang.
Having climbed its way to being king of the mountain in the PC sector, Lenovo is now setting its sights on mobile devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and yes, even wearables. Speaking of the latter, Lenovo now has a product page for its forthcoming Smartband SW-B100. Lenovo's targeting "young people who take care of their personal health and are interested in new tech trend products" with this one.
Why's Ashton Kutcher hanging around Lenovo, you ask? The short answer, quite simply, is marketing. But the longer answer is that he joined Lenovo as a product engineer a year ago and purportedly helped develop the Yoga Tablet 2 Pro, one of three new products Lenovo just rolled out. The other two are the non-pro version of the Yoga Tablet and the Yoga 3 Pro, an ultraslim convertible.
The numbers are in and according to International Data Corporation (IDC), Lenovo is still the top supplier of PCs in the world with a 20 percent share of the market in the third quarter of 2014, up from 17.17 percent in the same period a year ago. Meanwhile, Apple managed to claw its way into the top five chart by overtaking Asus for fifth place with a 6.3 percent share of the market, up from 5.7 percent a year ago.
