New Adamo too Advanced for Primitive "Open" Button

Perhaps in the future, all notebooks will measure a mere 9.99 mm thick, rendering today's laptops laughably obese by comparison. And if we're to take Dell's upcoming Adamo XPS as a representative of things to come, you can kiss the "open" button goodbye.

According to a report in BusinessWeek, Dell's super-slim notebook will feature a "heat-sensing strip on the lip that, when swiped with a finger, glows white and automatically opens the aluminum lid."

The article wasn't focused on the Adamo, however, and unfortunately no other details were given, so we still don't know what kind of hardware Dell plans to cram inside the skinny frame.

First Glimpse at the Insanely Thin Dell Adamo XPS

Just how thin is Dell's new Adamo XPS laptop? By the looks of things, you could drop one off a seven-story building, go grab lunch, pick up that gallon of milk you promised you'd bring home, and return in time to catch the laptop before it floats to the ground. Ever seen a notebook after it's been flattened by a steamroller? Neither have we, but we imagine it would look a lot like the Adamo. Think Nicole Richie post The Simple Life but pre-motherhood (actually, you're probably better off if you don't picture that).

Think we're exaggerating? We'd be skeptical too, if Gizmodo hadn't managed to snap a couple pics of Dell's upcoming ultrathin, which is supposed to be about half as thin as a MacBook Air.

Still no other details just yet, including finalized specs, pricing info, or a concrete release date.

Dell Slices Air with 9.9mm Adamo XPS Teaser

Dell launched a teaser site for the newest revision of the Adamo series of laptops, Adamo XPS. The site features little more than a picture of the ultra-thin device and the tag line reading “Crafted to fall in love with at 9.99MM.”

Let’s take a second to do the math: at 9.99MM the Adamo XPS aims to slice the Macbook Air (19.3mm) in half at their respective thinnest points. A remarkable feet no doubt, but Apple took heavy criticism for the features it removed to make Air the thinnest laptop available at the time. One must be wondering, what could possibly fit into the Adamo?

Dell insists this is merely a “design concept” and is holding out on technical specifications and details until a later date.

Dell Adjusts Adamo Price to Compete with MacBook Air

Three months after it arrived, Dell Adamo has received a price cut. A price cut for the Adamo became inevitable once Apple slashed the price of its svelte MacBook Air -perceived to be Adamo’s archrival - in June. Prices of all Adamo ultraportables have been lowered.

The basic Dell Adamo is now available for $1500 as opposed to its original price of $1999. This places it on level ground with the entry-level MacBook Air in terms of price. The basic version has a 1.2GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. But at the other end of the spectrum, the top-end Adamo variant still remains pricier than its MacBook Air counterpart. The new price of the top-end Adamo is $2,230. It features a 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor, a 128GB SSD, and 4GB RAM.

Dell Adamo's Achilles Heel: Battery Not User Replaceable

Dell’s Adamo is one sexy notebook, featuring an impressively thin form factor that allows its users to bring it with them just about where they want. But, along with all that good news we’ve got some bad to report – the battery isn’t replaceable by the user.

Following in the footsteps left by Apple’s 17-inch MacBook Pro, the un-removable battery can only be replaced if sent to Dell. There’s no word yet on just how much this procedure will cost as of yet.

Unfortunate news, to be true, but we can’t say that it completely surprises us. You don’t get a notebook this thin without losing some of the usual advantages.

Dell Adamo Unveiled and Hands-On, Just $1999 for the Stylish Thin Wonder

Dell teased us with a brief showing of their new Adamo laptop line at this year's CES, but after that first peek, we were all left hanging with only a mysterious website to satiate our curiosity. Today, Dell has finally officially announced the Adamo notebook line, which they call a "luxury brand notebook designed for the luxury conscious consumer." We got to play with the Adamo at a recent press preview meeting, and can confirm that this beauty is indeed luxurious -- easily worthy of envy. We have a ton of Adamo unboxing and close-up photos after the jump, but here are the technical details that you care about:

Adamo's launch models are 13.4" inches (screen resolution is 1366x768) , priced at $1999 for a 1.2GHz Core 2 Duo U9300 with integrated Intel X4500 video, 2 GB of DDR3 RAM, and 128GB SSD running a custom skinned Vista 64-bit. Dell has also custom skinned the Bios to match the Adamo aesthetic.
External hard drives (up to 500GB) and Blu-Ray drives are also available, both of which match Adamo's styling.
Dell told us that Battery life rated at 4 hours, even though the press release states 5+.
Physically, the Adamo measures only .65" thick (thinner than the Voodoo Envy), and weighs in at 4 pounds. Aside from the Dell and Adamo logos, the notebook's rigid surface --made from aircraft grade aluminum -- bears no other unsightly marks or stickers. Even the Windows authenticity sticker is hidden in a magnetic cover in the back.
Built-in ports include 2 USB (with power share, so you can charge devices even when Adamo is off), one eSATA/USB combo port, Display Port, RJ-45 (Wireless N is included), and a SIM card slot for mobile broadband. The Adamo has no Express Card slot nor microphone jack, though a tiny mic is embedded to the left of the keyboard.
The Adamo is now available for preorder, shipping March 24th in Pearl and Onyx colors. A $2700 model is also available in foreign countries, and sports a 1.4GHz CPU, 4GB of RAM, and a built-in 3G wireless card.

Dell's Adamo May Arrive Later Than Thought

Thanks to the rumor mill’s constant churning, there’s some new talk of Dell’s Adamo laptop not being released until the second half of this year, as opposed to the originally planned first half.

Reportedly, Dell’s ultra thin offering is only in sample production by Foxconn, and won’t be in volume production until the second half of this year. By that time, they should have already made about 400,000 systems.

Foxconn spokesperson Edmund Ding hasn’t denied the claims, but states that the company has “no knowledge” of the orders. There doesn’t appear to be any statement by Dell either.

It looks like the MacBook Air has the floor for just a bit longer than most had expected.

Dell's Adamo Revealed to be Crazy Thin Laptop Line, Still Mysterious

As you may or may not remember, it wasn’t too long ago that rumors were swirling heavily about just what Dell’s Adamo would be. Many expected that it would be a MacBook Air rival, and today we know that’s just the case.

The boys over at Engadget finally got some face time with the machine, and it’s looking pretty hot. It’s nearly an inch thick, sports a 13-inch screen… and that’s all the information they could get (they weren’t allowed to start it up or anything, but plenty of pictures were taken!)

The machine itself looks really slick, and is very reminiscent of Voodoo’s Envy 133. Let’s just hope that Dell is able to release some specifics about just what’s under the hood, until then, ogle to your heart’s content.
