The original ASRock Vision 3D is acknowledged to be one of the best small form factor HTPCs available. It was a reasonably specced machine for its time, but a page was recently discovered on the ASRock site that points to the second generation Vision with spiffy new Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs.
LG is not really a name associated with laptops, but that isn’t stopping the Korean company from taking its new LG A530 15-inch gaming laptop on a worldwide tour. Why take it on tour? This device has a high-resolution HD 3D screen, and that just doesn’t come across in pictures. So what can you expect?
Display maker ViewSonic today announced its new V3D245 model display, a 24-inch 3D LED backlit monitor with Full HD (1080p) support. The new monitor includes a built-in Nvidia 3D Vision wireless emitter and 3D Vision glasses, and comes with an HDMI 1.4 input to connect directly to Blu-ray 3D players or PlayStation 3 consoles. It also boasts integrated 2W SRS Premium Sound audio speakers.
Those newfangled 3D displays are awesome for gaming and movie-watching alike, but there's two things about them we don't like. Wearing those silly glasses for the full 2.5 hours-plus of Avatar 3D kind of sucks, and owning a 3D TV or monitor attracts Blu-ray-loving buddies like flies – flies that leave pizza boxes and beer cans strewn across your once-clean living room. Toshiba's taken care of both of those concerns with the Qosmio F750, a laptop with a glasses-free 3D display that will let you watch your 3D Blu-ray collection from the comfort of your friend's couch.
Intel's research division Intel Labs recently released a pair of open source software packages, including a distributed scene graph package to increase the maximum number of participants in 3D Web applications, like virtual worlds, by more than 20 times, and an advanced offline ray tracing package to help speed up rendering of photorealistic images on Intel-based systems by 100 percent.
Don't expect Microsoft to endorse WebGL (Web-based Graphics Library), the Khronos Group's cross-platform, low-level 3D graphics API for the web. Though it's supported in Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome, and will be coming to future versions of Apple Safari and Opera, Microsoft is refusing to support WebGL in its current form because several security risks make it harmful, the Redmond software giant said.
What do you know about 3D technology? Could you describe antialiasing? Can you define a Z-Buffer? How about a Phong shader? If you need a little refresher course on the ins and outs of 3d rendering, you're in luck* because we've got a a whitepaper for you!
*Note: If you're looking for information on bump maps, pixel shaders or tesselation, you are actually out of luck, because this whitepaper was written in 1997. Close enough!
What you do alone in your man cave is your business. If you want to put on a pair of 3D glasses and practice the Na’vi language, more power to you. Sony’s F Series Vaio 3D can make that dream a reality in style, but it lacks the graphics power to deliver first-class stereoscopic 3D gaming.
Acer’s HN274H is remarkable. Not only is this 27-inch display the first to incorporate the 3D Vision IR emitter into the display itself, but it also has HDMI 1.4a—so it’s capable of being used with a Blu-ray deck or PlayStation 3—and a WLED backlight. Exciting stuff, but it doesn’t do much good if the display is a disappointment in 2D. Fortunately, in that regard the HN274H was stellar.
