Check Point to Celebrate 15th Anniversary by Giving Away ZoneAlarm Pro Software

Given the widespread availability of free solutions, we know how power users hate to pay for security software. If you fall into this category, your options will become slightly more robust this Tuesday, November 18.

According to a spattering of reports, a company spokeswoman for Check Point said the company plans to celebrate its 15th anniversary by giving away a 1-year subscription to its ZoneAlarm Pro software security suite. For those not familiar with the program, ZoneAlarm Pro expands on the company's popular firewall solution by throwing in a spyware remover, protection against rootkits, ID theft protection, and other security odds and ends. The full program typically sells for $40/year.

If the reports hold true, you can download your copy from this link beginning at 6:00 AM PDT Tuesday morning. Procrastinators be warned, the link will only stay active for 24 hours.

Patch Tuesday Update Breaks ZoneAlarm on Windows XP - Updated!

ZoneAlarm+KB951748 = Broken Internet Access

From The Inquirer to DSLReports to our own readers, it seems like everyone's talking about the catastrophic combination of current ZoneAlarm products and Microsoft's KB951748 update for Windows XP from this month's Patch Tuesday. The update (MS08-037), ironically enough, is supposed to improve security for the DNS function of Windows. However, when you combine it with the ZoneAlarm firewall (ZoneAlarm Free, ZoneAlarm Pro, ZoneAlarm AntiVirus, ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware, or ZoneAlarm Security Suite), you lose ~~all~~ most network/Internet functionality (update: you might be able to ping servers, but you cannot connect to websites).

Solutions Workarounds

In the meantime, what should you do? ZoneAlarm recommends one of the following three options:

Adjust the Internet Zone security slider to Medium
Uninstall KB951748
Add your DNS servers to the Trusted Zone
