iBuypower Gamer Paladin 990

IBuypower’s Gamer Paladin 990 is a strange beast. After we completed our testing, we were left wondering just what iBuypower was trying to accomplish with its half exotic, half midrange rig.

Take, for example, the videocard situation. The machine sports a pair of Nvidia’s newest GPUs, but not the company’s top-end offering, the GeForce GTX 280. Instead, iBuypower uses a pair of EVGA GeForce GTX 260s. If these GeForce cards weren’t midrange when they were first released, they certainly are now, as Nvidia has taken a blowtorch to prices to keep the GTX 260 competitive with ATI’s Radeon HD 4870.

Full review after the thing.

Puget Systems Deluge-i A2

There’s a civil war brewing within the PC: Intel says the CPU is the head honcho while Nvidia argues that the GPU is boss. With its Deluge-i A2, Puget shows whose side it’s taking in this debate. This budget gaming box spends big on the videocard but skimps on the processor.

Did they side with the right team?

When HP designed the TouchSmart IQ770, it must have been thinking of that old saying, “No matter where I serve my guests, it seems they like the kitchen best.” This PC is tailor made for serving up—and scarfing down—digital media in the kitchen.

ABS Ultimate X8 III

One of our favorite scenes in Pulp Fiction takes place when Samuel L. Jackson’s character, the ever-so-eloquent Jules Winnfield, describes the wonderful gourmet taste of his friend Jimmie’s coffee. Of course, Jules and his partner have just pulled up to Jimmie’s house with a body blasted all over the backseat of their car. But for the briefest of moments, nothing else mattered, save for the sweet flavor of something that wasn’t freeze-dried Taster’s Choice.

Maingear F131

Hoo-hoo! That’s an exact recreation of the noise we made when opening the box containing Maingear’s F131 desktop rig. But “rig” might be too generic a description for the bright-blue machine; “behemoth” seems more appropriate. For in every direction—processor power, graphics, and even the freakin’ weight of the beast—the F131 seems to dwarf its competition.

Digital Storm Twister Ultra 4

When we looked at Digital Storm’s Twister Ultra 4, we thought of it as Every Dude’s Machine. You know, it’s just how the average person would build it. There’s no fancy-pants paint or custom wiring. But there is a gratuitous use of drive bay doodads like an LED screen, removable hard drive adapter, and Creative Labs Live drive. The upshot? The already-macho-looking Cooler Master CM Stacker case looks even more, well, macho. Yup, this rig will make you hitch up your pants, snort, and say, “Oh yeah, this is just how I’d build it—none of that sissy stuff!”
