DarkStarX

Well I went a bit overboard this year, especially since I still have a couple games from the winter sale I haven't played yet. lol!

But I bought:

The Witcher
The Witcher 2
Tomb Raider
Dishonered & DLC
Deus Ex:HR & DLC
Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate edition
Just Cause
Just Cause 2 & DLC
Alan Wake & DLC
Creature Slaughter Dome & Psycho pack for Bordlerlands 2
Simcity 4 Deluxe
Tropico 4 & DLC

Also last weekend I picked up Crysis 3 on Amazon for $17.

Its a lot of games, but considering I only spent about $100 for all of them, how can you beat it?

avatar

vrmlbasic

By getting the Witcher series on a GOG sale to avoid the DRM of steam, eliminating the Creature Slaughter Dome DLC as it was a complete ripoff and nixing the awful Tomb Raider reboot from the order. That's how ;)

avatar

DarkStarX

Ah yes, the evils of Steam, I'm sure I'm going to loose my entire library any day now, as everyone has been promising will happen for almost ten years now. lol!

As for GOG, love them, and have a lot of stuff from there, but considering I got both Witcher games for what GOG is selling the first one for I don't think I can complain.

As for the Creature Slaughter Dome, I never planned on buying it but my son wanted to get it, and since we play Borderlands 2 together, and as I recall it was something like only like $1.26 or something silly like that.

I managed to get a killer deal

Valve Complete Pack that contains:

Day of Defeat: Source
Half-Life 2
Half-Life 2: Deathmatch
Half-Life 2: Lost Coast
Half-Life 2: Episode One
Half-Life 2: Episode Two
Half-Life
Half-Life: Blue Shift
Half-Life: Opposing Force

I remember way back when many of those things listed were free mods. Part of me wanted to play Half Life 2 on the PC, to see if it was less disappointing than the 360 version, but it was overpowered by the part of me that pointed out that at the price charged this Valve pack was still a rip-off.

avatar

PCLinuxguy

yeah, i remember when alot of those were free mods instead of paid ones. for $90-$100 it is kind of a rip-off since these are fairly old now and should be coming down more in price, however when i got it for $34, that's a good sweet spot for these.

avatar

John Pombrio

I bought most of these Valve games at full price. I was lucky to get the Orange box for my kids. If you do not own these games already, there is no way that anyone who has not played these games would be "ripped off". All of these games and mods for less than half of what I paid for Half Life 2 alone?

avatar

PCLinuxguy

Exactly! $100 worth of games (when not on sale) for $34. It was a steal to me. I now have all of the official expansions for the first and second half Life games (been drooling over getting HL2 Ep1 and 2 along with blue shift and opposing forces for HL1. My coworkers talked about Left 4 dead and now I have both, and I get Portal 2 to be able to satisfy my puzzle solving itch bestowed unto me from the first Portal game.

The only 2 games I am missing to complete my collection to be set is NFS Hot Pursuit 2012 and COD: Black Ops 2. Sure the COD games are corny and multiplayer is full of foul mouthed 6 year olds, but as a casual gamer, i play for fun, not for rank, etc and have found a few lobbies full of similar players and it's a blast.

The Mac

I got HL2 free with a steam scratch off coupon with my AIW 9800Pro back in the day. Even my state of the art 9800pro choked on high settings.

But damn, that game gave me nightmares for weeks. Just the music changes and occasional freakishly loud and unexpected percusion hits made me soil my drawers. No game since has ever scared the crap out me like that one did.

I got all the rest in the Orange box on sale in one of the early sales.

avatar

PCLinuxguy

when it first came out I played it for the first time in the dark with a headset on to immerse myself. there were a couple of times it got me so good that my adrenaline started pumping.. hands shook, sweated cold sweat, felt like ice water was oozing around my guts. I love it when games can do that, as it means the developers did their job instead of being lazy.

avatar

dedgar

I got these:
Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 +DLC
Fallout New Vegas
Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon
Arma 2
Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead
Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead beta
Portal 2

And better yet, my bank account SURVIVED!!!
BWAHAHAHahahahhahahaha

AFDozerman

I was really trying to resist, but on the last day, I finally gave in and got Borderlands2 and the latest Tomb Raider.

avatar

John Pombrio

Yeah, I got Borderlands 2 for me and my son on the last day. When IGN and GameSpot both give over 90 scores, I listen.

avatar

vrmlbasic

Did you get the Borderlands 2 DLCs? Except for the costumes and the Creature Slaughter Dome (rip off) they're pretty fun. Far better than the actual game IMO, then again I'm not a fan of the BL2 humor (BL1 was far superior in that regard).

I've learned that SquareEnix is pretty evil: they allow their Tomb Raider game to be priced so low that people can't resist buying it and then they realize, tragically, that they've been duped into paying money for a game that is a rip-off at any price...even free.

avatar

silverblack

I did the same, that Tomb Raider price was too good to pass up. Also finally got Bioshock Infinite and Porker Night 2.

The Witcher 2
Crysis Warhead
Deus Ex: HR
DOOM 3 BFG

Those were the only games I bought throughout this whole sale. I actually regret buying Doom 3. They shouldve just released it for Android. My Tegra2 powered Xoom would have no trouble playing the potato engine powered Doom 3.

avatar

The Mac

Witcher 2 is an unbelievable game. Its a bargain at any price.

I consider it one of the best rpgs ever made.

Witcher 3 will be mind blowing if they up the ante.

avatar

DarkStarX

I picked up the Witcher 2 last week and well and since I started it I haven't played any other games as I absolute love it, although I am still getting used to the controls (I probably should just remap them, but I've been to busy playing it to bother just yet. lol!)

How much did Valve pay to advertise this here for 11 days straight?

You know these posts were ads. Posting about it 1-2 times is a story and maybe a reminder. Posting about it every day of the sale is an ad. c

avatar

The Mac

You are clearly not a PC gamer, as we all love these articles. Sometimes the comments more than the articles, but thats what one of the major functions of journalism is; to stimulate conversation.

There are many people who cannot access steam from work and need these articles the know whats going on.

This is not the first post you've made accusing MaxPC of receiving compensation from Valve.

You were told explicitly by the staff that this is not the case.

avatar

John Pombrio

Wrongo. I damn near wet my pants when MPC announced the summer Steam sale had started. I also read all the articles before going to Steam to look for particular games. I read every single post about Steam sale here on this site.
A Steam sale is not just a sale, it is a force of nature, a splitting of the cosmos, the Higgs Boson and the royal baby all rolled into one.

avatar

Brittany Vincent

These are not ads. These are recap posts for those who don't have the time or don't want to hit up the Steam store to see what's on sale. In fact, a quick Google search will reveal that most, if not all, tech/gaming news websites have done the exact same thing. Posting about it 1-2 times would not have covered each deal for those checking daily and looking for a quick reminder about what's on sale.

avatar

Scatter

I find that hard to believe.

Again, once or twice maybe, after that people are going to know about the sale and just go there themselves if they're interested. I can't fathom anyone going to a third party site on a daily basis to read what another company has on sale.

Do you think it takes less time to come here and read what's on sale then it does to just go to store.steampowered.com and just look at their front page?

Forgive me for being suspicious but I can't see how we're supposed to see this any being any different from the Newegg.com ads that you post as stories.

avatar

DarkStarX

Sorry but the Steam sale is big news for gamers, and as far as your get upset over this I have to assume that if they didn't cover it in this way you would be posting asking why with a comment like "Why no coverage of the Steam sale, didn't Valve pay you off?"

Can we get the information here off of other sites? Sure, but many of us read these stories more for the comments then the story itself. I've had comments direct me to a good, but overlooked games before.

avatar

PCLinuxguy

Maximum PC has countlessly dispelled these myths over and over again maybe even once a month depending on the article about a product. As much as I like Intel their site seems like a huge Intel shrine and advertisement as though they get paid by Intel, but they do NOT. please keep such silly thoughts out of the comment streams and spare the rest of us from such idiocy please.

avatar

Ghok

Well, Steam sales have become big events for PC gamers. Honestly, they're the time of the year I game the most and spend the most. I can see why Maximum PC covered them daily, but they were sparse stories... because they basically just said what the sales were for the day which felt a little pointless. I don't think I clicked through on too many because I already knew what the sale were. Of course, some people probably aren't as hardcore about it.

avatar

FGCC

I ended up with:

Castle Crashers(sorry bout that one)
Crusader Kings 2
Worms Revolution
x-Com: Enemy unkown

AND NO F$(#" TIME TO PLAY ANYTHING!!

avatar

vrmlbasic

I empathize with you on Castle Crashers. With 4 player coop, and for no cost (to me), it was tolerable on 360. Like awesomenauts it is a game that I could play once or twice and enjoy, so long as I didn't spend money on it.

I'm still surprised that Castle Crashers even has a PC version.

avatar

Renegade Knight

I feel your pain. No time to enjoy the games I bought last year, let alone this year.

I'm sayin'! I just got Dyad and a few other goodies. I tested it out on Twitch earlier: http://www.twitch.tv/molotovcupcake/b/433798877
