I am more interested in some updated chipsets from amd. pcie 3 support, more usb etc etc. Some actual mATX options would be nice as well. So I can at least feel up-to-date and relevant in the future if I go for AMD's current FX processors. They don't even natively support usb 3.0. Almost completely outdated.

This company is completely neglecting the desktop market in this regard, but I guess since other areas are going nicely they couldn't care less. Releasing new processors on chipsets that are more than 2 years old now, would seem a bit silly.

I'm not worried. When you use the same architecture for your APUs its not that big of a stretch to release an enthusiast grade product without graphics when the time comes.

FX is ending because AMD has said they are building future CPU's on the XBOX One and PS4's Jaguar based CPU.

So what if the 'FX' moniker goes away. The Athlon and Phenom monikers are still good titles and can be brought back

The story is more believable than the 9970 leak. There's talk, I know more rumors, that Kaveri APU is going to be delayed by at least 6 months. If that is true, I think the two main reasons for it are that they're are strapped for cash and they have to deliver on the console contracts. To mess up the Xbox and the PS would be a disaster of biblical proportions for them. Something has to give and it will probably be the desktop lineup.

The FX may be allowed to just hang on for a year or so and come back with steamroller. And I think that will happen, but will it get the excavator? I doubt it. At that point I think they will consolidate around a single socket for the desktop.

APU and CPU using the same socket?

I suppose it would be interesting if AMD did away with the distinction and put GPUs on all of its CPUs and achieved its "Floating point calculations should be done by the on-chip GPU not the CPU without penalty" dream.

So Steamroller won't use the FX moniker? That seems very odd.

Well upgrading from my 6300 to 8350 would be silly was hoping for Steamroller.

It wouldn't be the first time that some AMD product with "FX" in the name was discontinued. They might be clearing the way for a "Phenom FX" line.

rumor has it that they're bringing up the Phenom IV with 12 cores, 6ghz and 75watts (suposedly from the stuff i've been reading on forums and such)

I doubt its true but thats what i've heard

If they could release a 6-8 core part with 75W TDP I would be happy. Given how hot the current 5Ghz run, I don't expect it.

Really, how often does a story like this crop up about AMD and turn out to not have a single pinch of truth in it?
