Roku 3 Streaming Box Revs Into High Gear

The newest Roku streaming box features a new interface with a streamlined layout.

Roku this week introduced the Roku 3 set-top box, purportedly the fastest and most powerful Roku player to date. It has a faster processor and an enhanced remote with a headphone jack in case you want to stay up late without waking up the significant other, and a new user interface (UI) that supposed to deliver more fluid browsing and navigation. The new interface debuts on the Roku 3 and will roll out as a free software update in April to all Roku 2 models, Roku HD (model 2500), Roku LT, and the Roku Streaming Stick.

In addition to having a headphone jack for private listening, the remote doubles as a motion-sensing game controller for games like Angry Birds Space, Roku says (PDF) . Alternately, users can download a free Roku app to their iOS or Android device and use their smartphone as a command center.

"As Roku continues to build the largest selection of streaming entertainment, we are always exploring ways to improve the TV experience for our customers," said Anthony Wood, founder and CEO, Roku. "Roku 3 introduces thoughtful new features that customers will love. The intuitive new interface makes it easy to find movies and shows quickly while the private listening mode is perfect for late-night streamers who don’t want to wake up the family."

Out of the box, Roku 3 comes loaded with more than 750 channels, 1080p HD support, dual-band wireless connectivity, Ethernet and USB ports, and a microSD card slot.

The Roku 3 is available now for $100.
