I've read elsewhere these are mid-range soc's and not high-end. This would be suggested as so given the 600 series moniker. I could be wrong on this however I also wouldn't be surprised is Qualcomm has something bigger under its sleeve for high-end 64-bit computing.

Exciting times, indeed. I can't help but wonder what functionality can be added by integrating the radio with the chip? By opening up some real estate in the phone/tablet, can multiple radios be added to give the consumer the ability to move from carrier to carrier (now that unlocking phones has been given the green light)?
I, for one, can't wait...

There have been some rumors that this includes some kind of HSA support. Sounds far fetched, but Qualicom *is* a member of the HSA foundation, so could there actually be something to this?

I'm still waiting to see what they stuff in the unreleased 805. I think you'll find the 610 and 615 (awesome as they are) are not so high end once that part is revealed.

The numbering is what I find strange. Maybe it'll be like the current 600 and 800 parts. Where we see a powerful but mid-range 610/15, and then a high end 820 months later.

I think the 805 is slated to be the high end part you speak of. But who knows what else they will release. Personally, I'd love to see a high end chip with Nvidia's Tegra graphics on it. But Nvidia seems to have been shunned by the major mobile manufacturers for some reason.

nVidia's parts are late to market, and aren't as compelling for a smartphone. Qualcomm has so much more integrated into their SoC it's hard to come up with a strong reason NOT to use their part in a highend device. Tegra being an SoC, I'm not sure how you would be able to mix the graphics core with a separate part.

The 805 is mostly just a goosed up 800, not bad at all. However, the 610/15 are redesigned parts. I do know that the 610/15 aren't custom designs like Qualcomm usually does, and that they plan to release a custom version of them after the initial launch. At which point we may see the new 800 or 900 branded SoCs.

Tegra k1 looks promising, how well it does is going to come down to power consumption, and how well Adreno stacks up next to it. Everything I've seen on K1 has it WAY ahead current stuff, but consumes much more power.

Thanks for sharing that tidbit. I didn't know the 805 wasn't going to be a new design. I guess I'll be looking forward to the new 800 or 900 branded parts you're referring to.

In regards to K1, any idea how much more power it would consume? A few other factors are that Android is getting better about power consumption, batteries on high end devices are getting bigger, new memory modules are consuming less power, new screen technology consumes less power, new camera technology consumes less power, and new processors are consuming less power. I would hope that a combination would exist that would allow for a high end device with K1 graphics and decent battery life, as opposed to a middle of the road device that only does graphics really well.

But if that doesn't pan out, I'd be interested in seeing an Android tablet with a huge battery, a high end next generation Atom processor and K1 graphics.

805s biggest gain I think comes from the Adreno 420 GPU update. The CPU portion remains mostly the same. A lot of the new tricks Qualcomm has been showing off are courtesy of the new performance found in the GPU. Also there aren't any announced 900 parts coming from Qualcomm, I was just using that as a potential name they may go with.

At the top end the K1 pulls down some 5 watts. It's not going to find itself into phones and tablets at that kind of power draw. A sub 1 watt K1 part is what they'd need, but how much performance do you lose to get there, and where will the competition be by the time you get it to market?

I could see some cool laptops built around this thing. Gaming performance is somewhere around a PS3 Xbox 360. That's a fair amount of performance. A 10" laptop that you can sync a controller to could be interesting to some, but the games aren't there to support anything like that.

I doubt we'd see an Atom K1 crossover. Atom an SoC now and as such has graphics on die. Intel's road map has Atom partnered with their own Gen 8 and 9 GPUs at least until late 2015. Now a third party like an Asus could come along and create a tablet that has an Atom and K1 part and then sloppily bridge them together, but it'd be expensive and power hungry. Considering how expensive Android tablets don't seem to sell I can't see anyone taking that risk for a market that probably isn't going to have a ton of interested buyers.

As it stands K1 runs circles around everything else on the market, but I don't think a cut down version for phones could compete with whatever Qualcomm or (maybe) Intel will come up with. The one K1 device that's been shown is this giant 28 inch 4k all in one running Android. Because there's not a smaller 10" device out there it leads me to believe that power is going to be a problem for the K1. They essentially cut down a desktop GPU to make this thing.

K1 will have to find success in other consumer devices, or perhaps even in the privet sector. In it's current form it can't work for phones and tablets.

Awesome rundown. From what I have gathered from my reading I have pretty much came to the same conclusions. IMO the k1 will be amazing for tablets. I would like to see it used in the 2014 N7 (N8?) if there will be such a beast, as my tegra3 powered 2012 N7 is still doing its thing just fine. As far as phones go it's very hard to beat what Qualcomm is bringing to the table.
