Sony’s PlayStation Vita handheld console is just a couple of months away from making its Japanese debut, with its release scheduled for December 17, 2011 in that country. Sony formally announced its release plans for North America, Latin America and Europe at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco on Tuesday, revealing February 22, 2012 as the release date for these regions .

"PlayStation Vita will redefine traditional boundaries of gaming and blur the lines between entertainment and reality," said Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton at the conference. "Its launch will serve as a pivotal point in the history of portable gaming and create a new fan base of PlayStation gamers for generations to come.”

The PSP Vita, which features a 5-inch multi-touch OLED display, will come in Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi+3G varieties, with the former priced $249 and the latter $299.
