A new survey by market research firm Nielsen examines the viewing habits of both Netflix and Hulu users, and there's a definite disparity in how each one is accessed. When it comes to watching Netflix content via streaming, half of all viewers tap into the service's online catalog through their Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii consoles, whereas nearly nine out of 10 (89 percent) of Hulu users watch videos directly on their computer.
That's more than double the number of Netflix viewers who watch streaming content on their PCs (42 percent), though an additional 14 percent stream to their television by connecting a computer to it, which still trails Hulu at 20 percent.
Nielsen notes that Hulu and Netflix users also trend towards different content types. Almost three-fourths (73 percent) of Hulu viewers spend most of their time catching up on TV shows, 9 percent watch mostly movies, and 18 percent enjoy both equally. On the Netflix side, only 11 percent primarily watch TV shows, with 53 percent using the service almost exclusively for movies, and 36 percent watching both equally.
The survey results are based on more than 12,000 online interviews in March 2011.
