It was only a matter of time before Hewlett Packard slashed staff as a result of dumping its webOS hardware business, and that time is now. Several hundred employees in HP's Palm division are on the chopping block, many of which will be dismissed of their duties starting this week.
According to All Things Digital, the pink slips could total as many as 525 by the time HP is finished flushing its Palm division, though HP declined to comment on the exact number.
"As commented on August 18, HP will discontinue the development of webOS devices within the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2011, which ends October 31, 2011," All Things D learned from an HP spokesperson. "As part of this decision, the webOS GPU is undergoing a reduction in workforce. Today's actions are part of this initiative."
Despite the loss of what could be more than 500 Palm employees, HP claims none of this will adversely affect webOS customers, and that it remains committed to supporting and servicing those customers.
