Several months ago Western Digital was bragging about a 5mm-thick next generation Ultrabook drive with both flash, and 500GB of storage. This sounded like an impressive feat at the time, but that was so September 2012. Fast forward two months to November, and A*STAR has perfected a 1TB drive in the same impossibly small enclosure.
According to a press release from the Data Storage Institute (DSI), its new hybrid A-Drive features over 30 patented new innovations, which when combined, will hopefully be the future of small form factor PC’s and tablets. The current configuration of the A-Drive sports a 32GB SSD built in for either boot and caching, and they claim it will cost less than your standard Ultrabook offering. It has yet to be confirmed, but Yahoo! is tossing around prices as low as $73 per drive.
A*STAR claims it will still be several months before we start seeing OEM’s offering this up, but the future is looking bright for digital packrat’s who favor thin and light PC’s.
