Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) promised performance gains of up to 15 percent with its Catalyst 12.11 driver, which the company announced in conjunction with its "Never Settle" game bundles. Our own evaluation of the driver update using a Radeon HD 7970 yielded mostly minor framerate bumps compared to Catalyst 12.8, though performance did improve in the majority of games and benchmarks we tested it with. If you're interested in grabbing the new driver package, it's now available to download, albeit in beta form.
If rock-solid stability is your No. 1 priority, you should steer clear of beta software as a general rule of thumb. In this case, it might actually help to install the drivers. According to AMD, Catalyst 12.11 resolves a few annoying issues, including an application crash issue in Medal of Honor: Warfighter when running multiple graphics cards in a CrossFire configuration.
Driver updates don't come as frequently from AMD these days. The chip designer ditched its monthly update schedule several months back and said it would update drivers "when it makes sense."
