This rig wouldn’t get a second glance from most people—and that’s just how John Silis wants it. After seeing news reports of vandalism in his neighborhood, John decided to harness the power of technology to take a bite out of crime by installing a surveillance rig inside a 12x12x6 plastic electrical junction box.
At Maximum PC, we believe in real-world testing, and John did not disappoint. To simulate potential abuse from vandals and inclement weather, John handed out baseball bats, rocks, and a garden hose to the neighborhood kids and let them go to town on the Weatherproof Rig. It survived the onslaught with nary a scratch—and kept running. Word of advice, John, don’t let those kids near your gaming rig!
Computer? What computer? Waterproof baffles keep out the rain and bugs, and two 92mm fans keep this rig cool under the Florida sun.
Inside, rubber grommets act as shock mounts for the mobo and hard drives. The rig can be controlled via either Remote Desktop or an RF keyboard and a 2.4GHz video transmitter.
Power supply? We don’t need no stinkin’ power supply. John can trade out his Micro 320-watt PSU and run this rig off the solar panels you see here and two golf-cart batteries.
John’s Eclipse card can run up to 16 cameras. Right now, he’s running four; he plans to set the rig up for his landlord at a nearby apartment building.
For his winning entry, John wins a $500 gift certificate for Buy.com to fund his modding madness!
