When was the last time you updated your bookmarks? We're betting it's been awhile, and if you've been truly neglectful, you'll probably find several broken links as you scroll through your favorites. Like your underwear, it doesn't hurt to change things up every now and again, if for nothing else than to keep things interesting. Your personal hygiene may not be at stake, but your pride as a power user is.
With that in mind, we've scoured the web to bring you seven unique bookmarks that run the gamut from useful to wacky, along with a couple of old favorites that never go stale. Let's get started, but first, go change your skivvies if you haven't done so in a few days.
Mail Big Files
Few things are more frustrating than trying to email a large file to someone only to have it choke during transit. And we're not talking about gargantuan file sizes either; some ISPs set ridiculously low limits for sending attachments. How 1999! Not to worry, because even if your ISP refuses to step out of the Stone Age, you can still get around archaic limits with MailBigFile.com. Send files up to 100MB without needing to register, or for a $20/yr subscription, start sending attachments up to 2GB in size. Now that's more like it!
Is MaximumPC.com Down for You Too?
If you always get the answering machine when trying to call your ex-girlfriend, then it's a safe bet she's avoiding you. Stop calling and find a new flame. But when a website refuses to load, the answer isn't as simple. Should you assume it's down and move on, or does the problem lie on your end? You can load up your buddy list and ask your online pals to help you investigate, but there's a better way to investigate. Head over to DownForEveryoneOrJustMe.com, type in the offending the URL, and within seconds you'll know if the problem is with the site, or, as your ex-girlfriend claims, with you.
The Ultimate Gag Gift
Nothing gets your point across better than sending someone a steaming pile of dung. Unfortunately, lawmakers don't see it that way and trying to send a smelly gift through the mail is a surefire way to land you a hefty fine at best, or at worst, a bit of jail time. Instead, let someone else do it for you, and that someone is Poopsenders.com. No one knows for sure if what they send is the real thing, but it's guaranteed to smell like it. Choose between a quart or gallon of cow, elephant, or gorilla excrement, then sleep soundly knowing you've finally found a gift to send that someone who already has everything.
Photoshop Tips & Tricks
Photoshop isn't just a software program, but like Google, it's a verb. It's also laced with a daunting assortment of options, and they're not always intuitive to figure out. Even building a lolcat requires knowing how to stroke a layer. You can dive into the menus willy-nilly, or you can visit http://graphic-design.com/Photoshop for bite-sized tutorials that are easy to follow giving you the confidence to enter your favorite forum's requisite Photochop contest.
I Gotta Have That Video!
YouTube might be cluttered with more dung than Poopsenders.com, but every once awhile there rests a real gem amid all the crap. Or maybe you just can't get enough of those FreeCreditReport.com jingles. Either way, forget about cluttering up your bookmarks with various video links and download the clips instead. YouTube doesn't give you an easy way to do this, but TubeZoid does. It also works with MetaCafe, Veoh, DailyMotion, and bunch more. Just plug in your link, download the clip, and you're good to go. If your video player doesn't support FLV files, you can snag FLV Player or any other of the many free ones floating on the web. Oh, and it works with those 'adult' sites too.
My Mom Tossed Out All My Comics
We all had a cool comic collection as a kid, and there must of been a worldwide epidemic that affected all mothers. Parents don't like to talk about it, but it's no coincidence that we all have the same story. And not only comic books, but gone are all the baseball cards, Garbage Pail Kids, He-Man figures, and Micro Machines, all of which have long since rotted in some landfill. While the latter items may be gone for good, you can still relive your youth by buying a subscription to Marvel's Digital Comics Unlimited and catching your old favorites in online form. We're talking about Spider-Man's first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15, The Incredible Hulk #1, and so much more!
Take Naps at Work
So you stayed up late last night fragging your buddies in TF2. We understand, but your boss probably won't. You could call in sick, or you could save those sick days and catch a few Zs at work instead. Here's how you do it - wait for your boss to go on his lunch break or head to a meeting, then make your move. If you've been with the company awhile, you probably know exactly how long you have until he comes back, but you'll never wake up in time on your own. Luckily you don't have to. Head over to Kuku Klock and set the online alarm to make sure you don't get caught sleeping on the job. Genius!
Some fashions never go out of style, and the same applies to bookmarks. Here are a couple of old favorites that have withstood the test of time and earned a permanent place in our toolbar.
It's not just an exclamation, but a great way to stock up on nifty gadgets at bargain prices. Woot.com stocks a new item every day, but you'll have to be fast. Once they're sold out, they're gone for the day and you'll have to wait until tomorrow for the next killer deal. The exception to this is during rare Woot Offs where a new item appears once the old one sells out.
Never Register Again
More and more sites are starting to take an interest in you personally, and while that can be flattering, it quickly becomes tiresome having to register an account everywhere you go, especially when you're not likely to come back. Skip the online rigmarole and get quick access with BugMeNot.com. You'll find hundreds of useful logins to sites all around the web, even obscure ones. The only sites it won't work with are ones that require a paid subscription. For everywhere else, it's fair game.
So there you have, a new set of bookmarks to give your old favorites a fresh look. Have a favorite not listed here? Be sure and tell us about it below!
