Corsair Labs has set a new world record for the highest achieved DDR3 frequency by reaching a blistering 2462MHz at CL=9. The record was set on an Asus P5E3 Premium motherboard based on Intel's X48 chipset paired with an E8400 Wolfdale processor. View the CPU-Z validated results here.
RIAA vs Jammie Thomas: Part 2?
The RIAA won a $222,000 verdict against Jammie Thomas because, according to District Judge Michael J. Davis, making sound recordings available without permission is a copyright violation "regardless of whether actual distribution has been shown." Now Davis says he may have made a mistake. He wrote that he found a 1993 ruling from the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals that claims infringement requires "an actual dissemination of either copies of phonorecords." Oral arguments on a new trial are planned for July 1.
XP Now Available on XO Laptop
Microsoft last week announced an agreement with One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) to make Windows XP available on the low-cost XO laptop. Trials of the XO running Windows are planned to begin as soon as June in emerging markets and OLPC hopes to offer a version of the XO with both Windows and Linux. Read the press release here
Microsoft to Yahoo: I wish I Knew How to Quit You!
Two weeks ago Steve Ballmer said a hostile takeover of Yahoo "would make Yahoo undesirable as an acquisition for Microsoft," but the software giant doesn't appear to be ready to let go. Instead, Microsoft said on Sunday it has proposed an alternative deal that would involve a transaction, but not an acquisition. If approved, the proposal could save Yahoo from fighting a proxy battle with financier Carl Icahn, but could also raise confusion as to who's in charge. More here.
