Opera Advocates Browser Extension Standard

Pulkit Chandna

The next major release of Opera Software’s flagship web browser, Opera 11, will include support for extensions – those tiny morsels of added browser functionality that tap into popular web technologies such as HTML, JavaScript, and CSS.

Now that extension support is a feature common to most popular browsers, Opera feels it is the r ight time to start thinking about a universal standard for browser extensions . Of course, such a standard would mean that a single extension would work with all browsers.

“It's still a bit too early for that, but we're indicating willingness to do so," Håkon Wium Lie, Opera Software's chief technology officer, told reporters. "We think it would be fairly easy to write up that specification, if there is willingness.”
