I guess when your cards outclass the competition easily, you don't have to offer good games.

The Mac

how do you figure these outclass their AMD counterparts?

they are all pretty close in performance.

I can't recall the last time I thought: "here's how much I'm going to spend on a video card, the best one at that price is AMD"

Maybe if it was my HTPC and noise/heat were an issue, but not on my gaming machines.

To be fair, I still miss Voodoo.

But seriously, you don't offer a choice of 5 aaa titles to buy your video card if they're selling like hotcakes on their own.

PCPerspective was just saying that the AMD R7 265 did outperform a GTX 750 Ti. Both cards are supposed to be $150 and offer "1080P gaming".

The Mac

well, the 780ti is 5% faster than the 290x,

thats pretty insignificant to a lot of people.

My point was it sounded like you were saying there was a significant difference. "Outclassed" makes it sound like they arent in the same class.

Sure lots of people are willing to pay the $100 premium for that couple of extra FPS, but dont kid yourself that its efficient use of your dollars.

Also, since the damn miners have pushed the price of the R9s up into the stratosphere, i would have to disagree that they arent selling like "Hotcakes"

That one purpose really isn't a true measure of a successful product. They have one subset of a fringe group buying up one line of their product, but they are really not setting the word on fire, or they wouldn't need to keep selling off assets.

avatar

The Mac

why does it matter who buys them?

if they are selling more than they can produce, thats pretty much the definition of a successful product.

but what happens now that bitcoin isn't as trusted thaks to mt gox, and when it becomes too difficult to gpu mine?

The point I'm making is that it's not their intended purpose and it's a short sighted success. It's not sustainable if they can't get their credibility back in the Graphics (not mining) market, they need to decide if they are appealing to the enthusiast or budget market I think and try to lock up that market.

It's sort of like when they used to be the go to CPU maker for a lot of people because you could overclock them a little and they were worlds cheaper than intel, then the core2 duo and its super overclockability came out and they've been playing catch up ever since.

I would like to see AMD try to regain the budget space, because I much preferred them to intel back in the athlon days, but I think they lost their focus.

The Mac

it seems you are refering more to the CPU sector.

AMD has plenty of budget GPUS, as does Nvidia.

There are thongs of people wanting to buy the 290/290x but they cant because no one has them in stock.

just go peruse guru3d, [H], Rage3d, OCN, and TPU in the AMD sections.

Non-mining people are actually paying the inflated prices, when they can get one.

This months print mag made a couple jokes about availabilty as well.

WEll mac they did lose the price/performance category. That's why I went with the 780. It's just as good as 290 but way way cheaper.

avatar

The Mac

i was lucky and got a 290 at msrp, so i won the price/performance vs your 780

lol
