Nvidia Launches GeForce GTX 580M for Crazy Fast Gaming on the Go

Here's the thing about gaming on a laptop. In almost every case, the GPU isn't upgradeable, so if you plan on using your notebook to frag your friends, you better invest in a laptop with the fastest GPU you can afford. And if you're looking for the fastest mobile GPU on the planet, Nvidia claims its new GeForce GTX 580M with up to 384 CUDA cores and up to 2GB of 256-bit GDDR5 memory is it.

"The best game support. The best gaming features. The best gaming performance available anywhere. That's the essence of the GeForce GTX 580M," said Rene Haas , general manager of notebook products at Nvidia. "With power like this, you can turn all the knobs to 11."

The 580M's GPU runs at 1240MHz with a texture fill rate of 39.7 billion/s, while the memory cruises along at 1500Mhz resulting in 96GB/s of memory bandwidth. It supports all the latest goodies, like Optimus technology, DirectX 11, 3D Vision, PhysX, SLI, and so forth. It's roughly equivalent to the GeForce 560 Ti on the desktop (384 CUDa cores, 822MHz graphics clock, 52.5 billion/s texture fill rate, 1GB of GDDR5 on a 256-bit bus, 128GB/s bandwidth).

In terms of how the 580M compares to Nvidia's previous flagship mobile GPU, the 485M, this new part is built on a 40nm manufacturing process and sports a handful of efficiency improvements. It also brings to the table a slightly faster core clockspeed (1240MHz vs 1150MHz) and shader (1240MHz versus 1150MHz).

Nvidia also added the GeForce GTX 570M to its mobile GPU lineup. This one features 336 CUDA cores, 1150MHz GPU clockspeed, GDDR5 memory clocked at 1500MHz on a 192-bit bus, 32.2 billion/s texture fill rate, and 72GB/s of memory bandwidth.
