Well it's true......AMD drivers are becoming more frequent & better, but this issue was long over due to put it mildly. I just hope AMD can keep this up. Now there's another issue AMD need to work on and that's their CPU performance relating to single threaded apps. Theirs nothing sexier than a APU that's great at everything including the basics regardless of how thick the architecture is.

Well overall I'd say it was a good interview, but I think MPC dropped the ball a little bit questioning Origin and AMD regarding the past.

Origin's original claim: They were dropping AMD cards because of poor drivers, overheating and higher failure rates.

Their new response: Everything is okay now because they have better communication, they know what to expect, and the drivers have improved.

So uh, what about the overheating and failure rates? That doesn't go away from having better communication.

For top end CPUs, AMD dropped the ball. Even if it isn't needed, they should have done something with PCIE 3.0 on their FX line. Rumor was, with a BIOS/UEFI update the FX could have supported 3.0. If I were AMD I would do a few more things than just a BIOS/UEFI update.

1. Buy Creative. Getting the SoundBlaster series onboard their VideoCards and their Mother Boards would be a great boost. Especially with TrueAudio.
2. Linux. Out and out Linux support. With Steam OS about to bring the hammer down they could get a leg up quickly over the competition.
3. Really push Mantle, especially on Linux. Opening those pipes like that is a huge step forward. The Software Layer in Windows really does hold back the processing power of today's hardware. With Linux, Kernel to Client has a lot less software steps. With Mantle a Linux rig could outpace anything Windows has out. This is probably Microsoft's biggest fear. For non-believers in Mantle, play Thief with DirectX, then play it with Mantle. Huge difference. Scary huge. Makes you want to slap Microsoft for gimping our hardware all these years.

Yeah, it almost feels like they don't know how to make them any faster, or else don't have the resources.

1. Could be a good thing, though I seriously hate Creative ever since the Daniel K incident when they came out and literally said they have the right to cripple their drivers so they won't work properly on modern systems, which forces people to buy their newer hardware. I've bought Asus soundcards and haven't gone back.

2 & 3: Well they're not in the front seat as much as they could be, but hey, give it time. It all depends on Valve being able to court as many game developers over to Linux as possible. If they can do that, I think everything else will eventually fall into place.

I have to agree with the drivers comment. When I last tried AMD GPU's, 6-7 years ago, the drivers worked, but they were very inefficient.

Fast forward to today, it is totally different. I just got in a R9 280 and it is fantastic.....the drivers are extremely stable and performance is excellent for the price point.

Mantle the best thing since graphic cards? Good joke. If what Microsoft says about DX12 is true then this mantle nonsense will disappear.

They may say there are no deals behind doors, but that is always a lie, and they will not tell you due to legal contracts.

AMD most likely just convinced Origin to sell their cards with an irresistible offer, and I doubt they really changed their minds about AMD cards within a year.

AMD competting with Intel? Intel could wreck AMD even if they possessed a real threat to the market share.

This was another big advertisement by AMD without any substance. AMD is the underdog who couldn't.

VERDICT - 9

----------
----------
Vacation
----------

- Interesting Q&A.. no big sales pitch going on like with podcast 228 or 230 and no wild accusations like 226 & 229!!

- Good questions by MPC staff, especially by Gordon in absentia!!

- Love how the AMD guy says RAD-eon instead of RAY-d-on!!

- both Origin and AMD guys were pretty good.. felt like I wasn't being BSed too much!!

- Good questions by MPC readers!!

- Encoded at 128 for two podcasts in a row!!

- No Gordon rant (always a good thing)!!

- Friends don't let friends buy Geoforce without checking RADeon!!

----------
----------
Work
----------

- No Gordon and he didn't invite me on his vacation!!

- Seems like AMD was awful the past couple of years in a lot of ways. Apparently "stealing".. I mean.. hiring guys with British accents from nVidia helps with the turnaround!!

- I notice EVERY "secret" agreement never seems to actually be true.. at least according to the people being accused of having one!!

- 5-way GPU support?? Really?? This is like about the 289th thing I want to see done by AMD.. how about making a lot faster, more efficient high-end CPUs. The FX-8350 is almost 2 years old and, despite what the AMD guy said about old, OLD CPU vs NEW CPU architecture means OLD is SLOW. Even the FX-9590 is slower in almost every test (recently done by Anandtech.com) against a i7-4770K.. and a 4790K is roughly 10% faster than a 4770K!! And very shortly, Haswell-E!! This new FX-8370 is basically a dead product (2 year old architecture and only "slightly faster" than a 8350).. why is that being brought out?? I doubt repricing is going to help much!!

- NDAs.. embargos.. WHY???????????????? So what did the AMD guy say to you AFTER the mics were turned off?? You guys KNOW so much more than you ever can tell us. Kind of sucks to be us!!

- FRAPs?? Yeah, MPC never got into "frame rating" like PCPER & Tech Report did!!

- Four "that's a great question" and two "good question" - See my comments from podcast 230!!

- Social media apparently equals "Facebook, Twitter, stuff like that".. guess the MPC website isn't even "stuff like that"!! Also helps to have an unpronounceable last name in getting your question read!!

- No podcasts in a month, then two within a week.. how about some consistency in scheduling.. or do you just like to keep readers guessing and out of the loop??

My takeaway

HEY.. I'm Jimmy's friend!! Where is my Origin computer??????? :-)

Wow. AMD is on Origin PCs again. This is the first place that I've heard this. I have to say that with reporting agencies, it's always the bad news that gets reported and when that bad thing gets fixed, you never hear from that. GOOD GOING MPC!!! Thank you so much for giving us this good news!

He also seemed to be trying hard to hold back from saying that AMD is getting a new FX processor. Maybe it'll come bundled with HL3?
