Dear NewEgg, a lot of older hardware cannot be upgraded to windows 7 or 8 due to drivers not being available or acting wonky. I tried to upgrade my friends PC from XP to 7. the VIA drivers kept causing the system to lock up every time something was plugged into the USB port or there was a file transfer. So I was forced to re-install XP. Some computers will never be anything more than XP. I'll consider Windows 8 again after the next major patch.

I had a "vista capable" era XP machine that I installed Windows 7 on for testing. The Intel video chipset wasn't compatible.

Sounds like it's time for your friend to upgrade his hardware...or, yeah...just stay with XP and take his chances. But if you are having problems upgrading that computer to Win7, then I wouldn't expect much success with Win8...even with a new major patch.

XP is easy to kill if you provide security to the end users instead of the NSA

If you want the BEST deal of the day AND security, try YUMI 2.0 with any version of Linux

It's FREE!

Hell No!

Our National Security depends on Security!

I can't let a bunch of Criminals steal all our secrets now can I?

If "YOUR" National Security does not protect "MY" National Security, then YOU are the enemy!

You Silly Moose. When are you going to realize that the Brain Dead masses are not going to adopt Linux? Linux is not made for the computer illiterate masses. Those people buy Macs, not install Linux over XP.

Because Macs look pretty.

Linux UI's are easy to use. Just go get Ubuntu at the very least. The deal is people don't wanna relearn things.

I've seen old folks struggle with Windows just like they would with Mac and Linux.

Exactly, they don't want to relearn anything. Never understood why learning something new was considered a bad thing. I've set up a few older laptops with Xubuntu, and made it clear to the customer, that it doesn't run Windows applications. So far, no complaints.
