The difference between integrated and discrete is night and day imo. You don't even need to get one of those top of the line cards to make a huge difference. The ASUS Xonar DGX is what I have in my PC and it was only $30 I think, made a huge difference in the sound quality and range of my system. If you are only going to be using cheap PC speakers then ok, stick with integrated, but so many PCs are being used as media centers, jukeboxes, and especially gaming centers. Any of those benefit from the increased quality of discrete audio.
