Isn't the 990FX getting a little long in the tooth? I bought my board almost 2 years ago now. I find it interesting that AMD's GPUs now have PCIe 3.0 support but none of their boards seem to.

That board does seem of interest. One of these days I'll buy another AM3+ motherboard to drop my now-unused AM3 cpu(s) into. It amazes me that the old Phenom x4 955 I have gathering dust is still a capable processor for playing today's games...

I don't know if ASUS is making those boards anymore. There's a GEN3 version that has PCIe 3.0 support. But given that you'll see no real difference between PCIe 3.0 vs 2.0 with current tech, the R2.0 board is probably the way to go given that it's nearly $30 in savings.
