I have been building custom gaming rigs for several yrs. Laped many IHS`s and waterblockes and heatsinks and it indeed helps . Have also delidded about 25 + Ivy bridge and Haswell CPUs and I will say the cooling increase is vast. My currnt CPU is a 3770k delided with Swiftech Apogee HD waterblock overclocked to 5.0 Ghz@1.4V and stress test with Aida 64 Extreme Max temp
is around 70c I have never seen temps like that on stock IHS even with watercooling.

MSI is probably going to hear back from Intel very shortly about how stupid they are for publishing a process that has too many risks and few rewards. And how all the ricer rig kids are gonna try it for the 3DMark points they love so much

Though it does look like that board comes with a support bracket so you don't have to worry about crushing the CPU proper.

Why would they. The warranty is void. They know the risks. Intel would sell more chips and MSI more motherboards.

ricer? Are there American motherboards?

I didn't realize that there was so much crossover between the doofuses who play Fast and Furious with their Civics and people who build their own PCs.

For the folks that are thinking of delidding their Ivy Bridge and Haswell chips, DON'T. I naively thought this was a painless process (which it was). Getting the chip to work again was NOT painless! It was EXTREMELY finicky to get the heat sink mounted as the chip was getting pressured slightly more on one than another so I had to tweak the cooler so that one of the mounting pins is not even inserted. All that trouble and great thermal paste and I gained zero extra O/C. Top of the line ASUS mobo too.

Last podcast said that only half of people who delidded got any benefit and it was never that much more. there is a new Haswell coming out that is supposed to o/c well.

What that's telling us all is that Intel does a pretty good job putting the "lids" on and that they are fairly efficient.

i've known about deliding for awhile now but i have also seen a few guys over at guru3d that sand and polish the shit out of the ihs until it has a mirror like finish. the pictures looked sweet once they were finished. they claim it also helps with overclocking at it makes the entire surface flat without all the tiny grooves. i can't remember what they call that process though

CPU Lapping

oooh
I think you're doing it wrong

Lapping the heat spreader sounds like a good idea
Lapping the cpu.....not so much!

Yup. It's lapping
