No, it won't. Pay attention Microsoft and Apple:

NO ONE WANTS A SMARTWATCH.

Does MS enjoy failing?

WTF is with Microsoft? Why don't they put some focus on improving other products like uhm.. WP8. No radio compatibility yet, no file manager, you can't manually configure the MMS settings, the list goes on. LOL and the updates(which come like twice a year) only bring like 3-4 little features that any amateur developer can put out.

I don't get the whole smartwatch-thing. I stopped wearing a watch when I started carrying a cellphone. I'll be buying no smartwatches from any manufacturer unless it has a laser that I can zap stupid people with...in which case I'll want one for each wrist.

I love watches. I have 6 different ones. I wear a regular Armitron digital watch while I'm at work, and I also have a Fila Silverstone Ani-Digi Watch that is hard to find now-a-days. Incredible timepiece! Awesome looks!

I prefer having a watch over using something like a Smartphone, but I see no need for this "Smart-Watch". My iPhone 4 is for calls, emails and apps, and my watch is for time.

I would wear a watch in a fashion-sense if I were so inclined. For example: if I could afford some Swiss dress-watch I'd wear it on special occasions. Or if it was something handed down to me through family or whatever.

...but I get that many people still prefer to wear a watch.

I feel the same way. I have no practical need for a watch but wear them to round out my wardrobe (my girlfriend buys me a watch for just about any occasion otherwise, I wouldn't own one).

I just don't see why I would need something attached to my wrist that displays the same info that my phone does. With such a small display size, it wouldn't be very practical for me. Maybe back in the day when cell phones were the size of lunch boxes, ok.. it would be more convenient to look at a watch but my smartphone is never further away than arms reach anyways so why would I need it? I don't get it.

I still get the "Iron Man" thing too. Athletes like runners and stuff could benefit from a good rugged digital watch in these times.

I am excited to see what becomes of this. Hopefully it will have great support for all mobile OSes, not just Microsoft's. I have a MotoACTV and love it. It is really good at what it does. This developing smartwatch niche is really interesting. But it is just a niche. I don't see everyone clamoring for a smartwatch.

Does being "three times harder than glass" mean that it can still crack?

I just hope it's got a 5" 2560x1600 Super LED 3 screen, and an UltraPixel camera. And the Wi-Fis.

I'd love for Apple to pull an April fools joke and "leak" pictures/details of an iToilet or something just to see how many tech companies scramble to put something similar together.

Is this assuming that this very niche, smart watch market that is forming is all because Apple thought to do it?

Because there have others well before Apple who doesn't even have anything out yet.

I think his point was that when it's rumored that Apple will do something all of the other companies get a fire lit under their asses to beat them to the market. Nothing to do with original invention. They didn't invent the tablet but only a fool would think that tablets would be a thing now if not for the iPad.

90% of the stuff they make is a huge success and dictates the direction of the industry...there's a reason Apple is an economy in and of itself. Other businesses strive to be as successful because that is, after all, business.

avatar

jgottberg

Exactly my point.

It's not that other companies haven't thought of wearable stuff like this. They have. BUT, they weren't Apple, a global electronics powerhouse at the moment. When Apple does things, other companies take notice. If Joe Bobs Electronics were designing this, I'm sure we'd all snicker and not a single tech giant would follow suit. That was kinda my point - I probably didn't convey that well enough.

There has been some form of smart watch out for a while. I've never been interested. Attaching my phone and apps plus internet access to my wrist just makes no sense. It's almost backward thinking to me.

Now put it on eye-wear and you've got something. Goggle's way ahead of the game on this IMO.

Talk about engineering a product no one really asked for... I can't see these being any more popular than those goofy calculator watches 20 years ago. Like the old saying goes, "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should"

I would have to agree, I have little interest in a smart watch.

My phone isn't THAT far from my sight in my back pocket...

Since I started using cell phones, I've gotten to like not having anything on my wrist. I don't think I'll be interested in these things.

"Will the next battleground be your wrist?"

I really hope not...

I agree, that sounds painful.
